| lmkramer's Full Review: Canad Inns Polo Park |
While on vacation to Winnipeg recently, we stayed at the Canad Inns Polo Park with our family of six and were very pleased.
The motel is conveniently located to Polo Park Mall, Canad Inns Stadium, and the Winnipeg Airport, as well as being an easy drive to Assiniboine Park or Downtown Winnipeg.
The motel itself has regular rooms and kids' and adults'-themed suites as well as a large pool/waterslide area, restaurant, banquet facilities, and a lounge.
We stayed in one of the Kids Theme rooms for $119 CDN. The room itself isn't larger than a regular two-queen motel room, but the area where one queen bed would normally be has been enclosed, with two well-built sets of bunk beds, a desk, television, game player, and kids' chairs, so the kids have their own pocket-doored hideaway, and each their own lamp by their bed and drawers under the bottom bunks. There are three themes to choose from: outer space, under the sea, or jungle. Our kids really liked their astronaut-themed area.
The room also includes a hairdryer, microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator. Although the rooms are not huge, we had ample space and storage for our things and room to set up a porta-crib for the baby. The queen bed was average; the pillows were lumpy but substantial, and the kids' mattresses were quite comfortable (we put one on the floor for an adult to sleep on for a while).
A few things to note about the rooms if you would choose to stay here: the water gets VERY hot in the taps, so be careful, and the only sheet provided for the portacrib was a regular bedsheet rather than an appropriately-sized sheet.
The pool area is large, with a big 3-meter swimming pool with a long tube water slide, a "kiddie" pool, and a large hot tub, as well as an exercise area.
The Aalto's restaurant is known for its lunch and dinner buffets, and had reasonably-priced breakfast specials and a good kids' menu.
The entire hotel caters to families well. When we arrived, we received an adventure-club kit for each of the children, which included a secret decoder. There were coded clues posted in various places around the motel, and if the kids solved four of them, they got to choose a small prize at the desk. The coloring-book menus and codes kept the kids busy at mealtimes for two and a half days before they had solved all their clues.
The motel has a gift shop which includes swimming pool accessories as well as toiletries and gifts. Of course, the convenience comes at a price, but it was nice to find that extra roll of film that I needed.
Parking is free on-site. The pool area requires wristbands and is for motel guests only.
For a family of six, finding a single motel room is becoming quite difficult, so we were pleased with the price of the room and the amenities it offered. We also joined the CanadInns frequent stay program and received enough points from signing up and our room and restaurant charges that we earned a $50 gift certificate already.
Although Canad Inns is a Canadian chain, they are in the process of expanding to the U.S., with a hotel being built in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
We enjoyed our stay at the Canad Inns Polo Park and would stay there again on another visit to Winnipeg. Its family-friendly atmosphere, fair price, and convenient location make it a great place to stay.
