Cons: Weekly housekeeping.
The Bottom Line: Candlewood Suites Las Vegas is a great alternative to a casino hotel. 2 blocks from the heart of the Strip, but quiet, comfortable, clean, and convenient! Definitely recommended.

Candlewood Suites Las Vegas: Comfort, Clean, Close, and Cost-effective!
Summary
The Candlewood Suites Las Vegas is conveniently located at 4034 Paradise Road, near the intersection of Flamingo Road -- just two blocks from the busiest part of the Las Vegas Strip. My room, number 204, was large, clean, comfortable, and quiet. The hotel has a number of attractions for the cost-conscious, including kitchenettes, laundry facilities, free gym, and free parking at the door.
Introduction
Recently, on a business trip to Las Vegas, my hosts booked me at the Candlewood Suites Las Vegas. I have traveled to Las Vegas many times, but have always stayed in hotel casinos either downtown (the Golden Nugget) or on the strip. Before checking in to the Candlewood Suites Las Vegas, I was worried about these new arrangements -- but when I checked out, I knew I would probably return.
Location
The Candlewood Suites Las Vegas is located at 4034 Paradise Road, just north of Flamingo Road. This places it two blocks from the busiest part of the Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road) where the famous Bellagio, Caesars Palace, and Paris Resort and Casino are located.
I would only be exaggerating a bit if I said that the walk from the Candlewood Suites Las Vegas to these casinos is less than the walk from the casinos' own self-parking.
The Candlewood Suites Las Vegas is also located an easy drive or cab ride from McCarran Airport (LAS). And you don't have to get on the busy freeway to get there, you just drive about 1 mile south on Paradise road! The Candlewood Suites Las Vegas is also located less than a mile from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Don't worry about where to eat, either, Morton's Steakhouse and other restaurants are next door. Starbucks is right across the street, and P.F. Changs less than a block away. In the mood for the Hard Rock Cafe? That's about a block away.
The Room
I was in room 204, overlooking the parking courtyard. All of the rooms are more or less similar to mine. Upon entering you walk in to a large kitchen / office / living room area. There is a separate bedroom, and a separate bathroom off to one side.
The kitchen features a full size refrigerator, a two burner cooktop, a large microwave, a coffee maker, a sink, a dishwasher, and disposal. The cupboards are fully stocked with cookware, tableware for 4, and some supplies (like dishwasher detergent, dish soap, paper towels, salt, pepper, coffee and creamer).
Separating the kitchen and the living area is a large, multipurpose work table, large enough to seat a family of 4 at dinner, but also a great office desk, with bright lighting, telephone, and (free!) internet access.
The living room has a double size sofa bed, a reclining chair, and large television with DVD and VCR.
The bathroom is also large, with a tub and shower (nice water pressure and plenty of hot water). A hairdryer is provided.
The separate bedroom has a queen size bed, its own TV, a desk with internet access and another phone.
Each room has its own air conditioning, controlled by a wall-mounted thermostat in the living room.
Housekeeping
The room was spotless. Unlike other hotels, however, Candlewood Suites are only cleaned once a week, or when you check out. This means you make your own bed, and have to tidy up after yourself a bit. Linens and towels can be exchanged at the front desk if you need clean ones, and you can arrange to have your room cleaned sooner for a fee.
I was in a nonsmoking room, and even with my sensitive nose I couldn't detect a whiff of stale smoke.
Amenities
In addition to your room amenities, the property offers a pool, jacuzzi, exercise facilities, and a guest laundry. They have a free DVD library available at the front desk.
One unique feature is a "pantry" -- imagine a small convenience store right in the lobby. You can get just about any travel or basic housekeeping item you might need, and the price isn't unreasonable. Payment is on the honor system: you fill out a slip with your purchases, and the amount is added to your final bill.
Safety and Comfort
I stayed at a very busy time of year and the hotel was full. I was very surprised, and happy, that the other guests were quiet and respectful. Compare that to the nonstop party atmosphere of many of the big casino hotels (you know, when you get woken up by someone pounding on your door -- a gambler who had a bit too much to drink to remember his room number)! At the Candlewood Suites Las Vegas, I hardly noticed other guests, and my sleep was unbroken.
Summary
Although the Candlewood Suites Las Vegas is not for everyone, those seeking a break from the mega-hotels on the Las Vegas strip, or those traveling on a budget but still seeking good, clean accommodations should strongly consider the Candlewood Suites Las Vegas. Remember, though, if you need daily housekeeping you may want to look somewhere else.
