| mjgroff's Full Review: Canidae All Life Stage Dog Food 40lb |
Some people "fuel" their dogs for a lifetime on the cheapest food available and their is no obvious harm. And at $10 for a 40 lb bag, they have an economic incentive. The same people would argue that their mother smoked, ate bacon, butter and so on every day of their life and lived to the happy old age of 95. Another argument that would fit their pattern is that Russian roulette is a perfectly safe practise. Only one in six barrels contains a bullet...
The FACT is that way more than one in six people who eat poorly suffer from health problems and the same applies to animals. Ask a vet if the incidents of cancer, diabetes and other ailments is increasing in animals. If they know the statistics, they will say yes. For this reason I fed my pet what I thought was quality food from the start. I chose the regularly available brands Techni-Cal and Pro Plan. These are similar in price and ingredients to Iams, Science Diet, Nutros and others. On these foods my pet had problems of excessive ear wax requiring weekly cleaning with fluids and two yeast infection in her ears requiring medicine. She was never enthusiastic about eating her food. She frequently chewed her own feces in the yard. Her coat was often dull and full of dandruff. I didn't immediately attribute these problems to her food.
Something, I don't remember what, triggered me to further research pet food on the web. I discovered just how bad the vast majority of food was including the ones I thought were premium. Do the research yourself. You will believe it more if you read it first hand. The lowest quality animal parts/byproducts and grains are used, those not suitable for humans. This means skin, organs, feathers, grain already processed and stripped of nutrients and perhaps even diseased meat, rotten grains, road kill and other gruesome stuff. These are preserved with chemicals not allowed in human food and sprayed with rendered fat (often the rancid byproduct of fast food restaurant deep fryers) to make it tasty.
So, following the research I went to my vet to see what food they had to offer. Their choice was Hills Prescription Diet. It certainly was expensive enough to be quality but when fed it, my pets' health/behavior didn't change at all. Its ingredient list included all the warning signs of poor quality ingredients. It just had more "healthy" chemicals added in.
I gave up on my vet as being a responsible advisor. I found the only naturalistic/healthy pet food store in my area and went to see them. They only stocked Canidae and Solid Gold and assured my they had human quality ingredients without dangerous preservatives and lots of nutrients added. I chose the Canidae over Solid Gold because its vitamins may be more digestible.
Within two weeks the ear wax problems disappeared. My pet completely stopped chewing her feces. She runs to her bowl as soon as it is filled eating every single kibble quickly. Her coat is dandruff free and shinier.
I am convinced of the genuine quality of this food and would and do recommend it to any dog owner. If she does ever tire of it I will try the Solid Gold. It may also be of exceptional quality.
