Pros: Great Features,Print, email, Copy and fax like a professional
Cons: A little pricey for a home office.
In my home office I wanted a laser printer, fax, scanner and copier. I have a multi-functional inkjet multi-function copier that has these features, but with automated forms, it isn't the best.
I began my hunt checking out websites and different local vendors. As I got close, I started asking more and more questions, and frankly, the imageRUNNER C3170i was for me.
It wasn't the cheapest, but I expected to pay more for what I wanted. After plunking down over $10,000 the IR C3170 was delivered and set up. I connected it to my home network, downloaded the newest drivers from the Canon website and was up and running.
Not the simplest, but with a true office unit, I knew it wouldn't be as simple as home units. I began to copy in color right away and was impressed with the overall color. Two-sided proposals came off of the IR C3170 and were ready for a professional presentation.
With the mailboxes you simple scan or print to the copier's hard drive in a mailbox and with 80GB storage, there's a lot of room for my forms. Now I don't have to search for my forms, they live in the 3170.
I have to admit, I wasn't sure I'd use the scan-to-email or scan-to-file all that much, but once I started, its my favorite. The fax board makes the 3170 a complete machine for sending faxes from the copier or the PC.
I print about 2,000 pages per month, and my inkjet was eating my lunch. At about $.05 per page, I was spending around $100 per month. That's a ton of cartridges.
Now I print the same volume, but for about $30 per month.
All in all, if you need a large laser printer, that prints double-sided documents up to 11 X 17" automatically, this is a good bet. It handles everything I can throw at it, and with the 11 X 17", I fold my documents into booklets and it saves stapling. The great result of doing that is that the 3170's meter only counts once, so I'm cutting my printing costs in half.
If you have a home office with a reasonable amount of volume, you could sure do a lot worse. I love my 3170i
