| briansimmons's Full Review: Canon CanoScan FS2720U Film Scanner (35 mm) |
We wanted to archive the family slides and researched many other makes. The FS2720U stood out because it is quiet, scans high resolution (2720 dpi), came with APS adapter (others charge $150+), has a USB interface.
We chose this model primarily because of the portability of the USB interface. We wanted to be able to carry it along when we visit relatives so that we can plug into our laptop and scan on the spot. The SCSI adapter models out there are cheaper but must also be dedicated to a machine with the SCSI card installed (FS2710 comes with SCSI card). The other nice thing about the USB interface is the ability to ship it to one of our relatives for them to borrow and they can just plug it in, load the software and start scanning. The USB will probably be a plus if we decide to later sell it.
Slides are the easiest to scan, slide them in, preview slide(40 sec), make adjustments (if desired) and final scan the slide (@2720dpi, 1 min 50 sec). Things move along rather quickly and you can scan while using your computer for other things. Processor intensive applications will slow down the scanner but it never fails to provide a quality scan.
The APS adapter is easy to use but takes a little longer to scan as the film must be advanced by way of a hand crank for each shot.
Negatives must be placed in a carrier and manually advanced to each scanning position as well.
The included Adobe Photoshop software is really nice for editing the final shots and improving the color balance on 35 year old slides.
We have now scanned 1200+ aps frames and 700+ slides (still scanning) and only a few 35 mm negatives. The machine has performed flawlessly.
It is easy to turn those boxes of scans and negatives into a few cd's. It is also nice to be able to share all those memories with extended family and friends by now just burning a cd for them.
