| vsolanoy's Full Review: Canon CanoScan FS2720U Film Scanner (35 mm) |
The CanoScan FS2720U is a terrific tool for the advanced amateur / novice photographer that still use film.
I've used it to scan various types of film, both negative and slide, with fantastic results. Images appear bright with resolution that surpasses even the highest resolution consumer digital cameras on the market.
Both 35mm negative strips and APS cartridges are compatible with this scanner with the provided 35mm film adaptor, as well as a nifty APS adaptor. However, the film must be manually advanced - no auto scanning of multiple film frames.
The caveat comes in that automatic scratch and dust removal are not available, which means working on the scanned photos in Photoshop for final clean-up. Additionally, preping the film prior to scanning helps - basically, use a can of air to blow dust and any other particles off prior to scanning.
The scanner is also not Hamrick VueScan compatible, although I've gotten it to work by first running the Canon software, exiting, and running the Hamrick software.
The software that came packaged with the scanner was not Windows XP compatible, but Canon has provided a patch on their website that fixes the problem. The FS2720U works with Windows ME and Windows 2000.
