When I first opened the box, I was astonished at how slim and light the scanner is. How could Canon possibly make a quality scanner so sleek? Even though the scanner is very small and light, it is not flimsy. The construction is actually good quality.
We really needed to find a scanner with a USB interface that was light and portable. We evaluated handheld scanners and some other flatbed scanners, and this was the most economical choice. The 1220U is so slim that it fits into a case with a laptop. The quality, resolution, and ease of use is much better than a handheld document scanner which would have been our other choice for portability.
The industrial strength USB cable also provides power to the scanner so you do not need to carry around an additional power cord. The software installs easily, but we had problems on a Windows 95C laptop with added USB support. Once we put a clean Windows 98 install on the laptop, the problems went away.
At about 20 seconds per page the scanner is reasonably fast, slower than SCSI, naturally. This scanner is quiet, and the images are crisp and clear. Since we will be using this for text scanning, the ability to scan documents is very important. With OmniPage Pro, this scanner works very well.
Graphics scan well, also, at 1200x2400. This is an all-around great scanner. The physical design is quite incredible. If you are looking for a portable scanner, this is definitely a winner.
