This scanner is so compact. Most of the books I have are bigger than the scanner. Z-lid expansion helps scan bulky items such as big books and other irregular shape items. It is high resolution (1200 dpi) with 42 bit. It is also USB powered, so there there is no big AC adapter to plug in. It comes with Adobe PhotoShop 5.0 Limited Edition, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000, and Caere OmniPage Pro 9.0. It is pretty easy to install. All you had to do was plug in the USB and install the software on the CD. To scan, all you do is press 1 button and click on Custom1. I purchased this scanner because I was limited on space, so I saw this in the store and it was so small. I usually scan pictures that are scratched or damaged and I touch it up. It scans great, so you can't tell which one is the original.
