Pros:Tough build
Good value
Comfortable
Adaptable
Holds a laptop
Cons:Just that little bit too small.
The Bottom Line: Get it or the 1EG, simple as that. Need more room for lenses? 1EG. Happy with two or three lenses? 100DG all the way!
It's hard to find reviews on this bag online, so I'm going to attempt to provide some insight for anyone interested in purchasing the 100DG.
First of all, I'm sure the reason why you're looking at getting the 100DG instead of the 10EG or 1EG is either because it looks cool in black and silver (compared to the olive and black theme that the EG series comes in) or because it can hold a laptop/notebook as well as your camera gear.
Well I bought it for the latter. But the former made the choice all the better!
The 100DG is the only Canon bag that seems to be designed distinctly for their digital cameras. The ability to hold a laptop (up to 13.1 inches wide) is fantastic, especially for someone like me. Although I take in excess of 6GB worth of Compact Flash cards with me when I travel, it's nice to be able to upload them on the go and empty your cards for another round of photography.
It also comes with the Canon 10DG Custom Case, which is a nifty separate pouch that has enough room to hold about a dozen compact flash cards and about four CDs without cases.
The build quality of the bag is fantastic, using tough synthetic fabric, however the 10DG case is made of a much thinner synthetic fabric that feels a bit 'cheap'. Then again, it doesn't really need to offer quite the same amount of protection that the whole bag has to.
The bag has nifty side pockets that are big enough to hold chargers and extra batteries and the like. There's a front pocket too, which is big enough to hold the user manual for my camera, as well perhaps half a dozen miscellaneous cables.
My only grip is the interior of the bag. It's just too small! Well, not *that* small... but if Canon wanted to improve on the bag, they should release a 1DG that's about six inches longer and maybe four inches wider. Websites claim that it can hold 1 pro body plus 2 or 3 lenses, but that's pretty much the ceiling on this thing. After I put 1D or 10D in there, along with a 70-200mm EF f2.8L, a 16-35mm EF f2.8L, there's not much room left in the main compartment. I can put a 50mm f1.4 prime on top of the 16-35mm, but that's pretty much it. It would have been nice to have been able to put in four to five lenses.
Externally, the bag has a whole bunch of clips, so if you're the type of person that doesn't mind clipping their lens bag onto the outside of their bag, then it's just fine.
Every divider is removable, even the one separating the laptop from the rest of the gear, so you can customize until your heart's content.
Currently the bag holds my 1D Mark II, 70-200mm, 16-35mm, 50mm prime, associated lens hoods, a 12" Toshiba Portege in the main compartment and the 10DG with 8 CF cards and two software CDs . The side compartments hold four spare batteries, the charger and appropriate power and data cables. The front compartment holds the user manual and general purpose items (lens pen, blower, spare cleaning cloth, pens, paper).
Great item, if only it was a little bigger! Maybe that's one way of culling the amount of lenses (and weight) I have to carry with me!
Would definitely recommend, especially if you can get it for under $100.
