grayfair's Full Review: Canon Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera w...
The Canon Rebel XT is an awesome venture into digital photography. Using the full automatic features, I didn't get the best pictures out of the box. However, after raising the contrast and sharpness, the accuracy of the photos are fantastic. It's easy to use and combined with the online printers, it's very cost effective as compared with print film.
The software is easy to use for novice computer users. However, if you know what you're doing there is a lot of stronger products for image management and photo enhancement.
Looking at the pictures on a computer screen can initially cause some doubt in it's abilities. But once you have your film printed, they come out great.
I purchased from bestpricecameras.com out of NY, which I would not recommend to anyone. They didn't deliver the merchandise as promised, stating I would get "a high speed" flash card, but I received the entry level flash card. Was also suppose to recieve tripod and digital camera flash, which I didn't get but tried hard with several calls. Much stories about backordered and boats from China. I found out after the fact they overcharged me on several items. Who knows....purchase from the top retailers. bestpricecameras.com was very slick and slimy.
6 Months Later....
Just an update...the Canon is still a great buy. I've used all the speed settings from 100 to 1600 and all of the different programs from fully automatic, shutter priority, aperature priority, and fully manual. It even has several other fun out-of-the-box sunlight, portrait, action, and indoor settings but I don't use them. Some will find them useful though.
The indoor flash I'm not too happy with, but its most likely because I'm not using it as I should. But it doesn't seem be bright enough to reach the depths of a bigger picture and then close up it washes out the color. Everyone I speak to recommends Canon's Speedlites.
I bought a 28-105 lens and 100-300 lens. Both work great and take fantastic shots.
I purchased a couple of SanDisk Ultra II 512MB memory cards and they hold about 150+/- images in hi-res which are large enough to print poster size prints. You can always scale down your image size in the camera and accomodate upwards of 400-500 images on the 512mb memory cards
I've also started using the camera with my home grown portrait studio. I've bought Wein hot sync hot-shoe to sync my 2 black Speedotron studio flashes. Have to use the camera in full manual and adjust the exposure settings. But the shots are incredible and so full of detail I may have to get a soften filter to hide peoples imperfections.
Anyone can use this camera, from novice to pro, although pros will most likely buy the 20D for faster speed and control.
