My wife helped make this decision, I was looking at an S3IS, and debting the xt. I figured if the S3is does what i need, low light photos, toddler "hey look at me" pictures and general toddling around. My christmas pic with the old S40 were horrible, all I got was the back of his head, by the time it flashed and focused.
The camera with the right settings will take the most wonderful no flash photos, and even if I need the flash I can use it every 1 second not every 3-8 seconds. Focusing is almost instant.
Back to the wife, i showed her how the S3IS took pictures, 1 per second or so without flash and 1 every 2-3 with flash, she looked at the rebel and said lets get this one. (me:grin from ear to ear). I shopped around and found it for $599 at compusa, I took their ad to best buy who offered the best warranty, 4 years with accidental for $129, compared to CC $219.
Great camera!! Speed is un beliveable, as soon as a speeding car enters the view finder you WILL capture it, no lag at all.
CONS:-For $600 it should come with at least a 16meg cf card,
-Cap should come with string to hold it on
