I had done by research on which digital SLR camera to buy, so when it came time to buy one in a hurry, I was prepared.
I used sites like dpreview and reviews in consumer reports to make my decision. I settled on the digital rebel XT. The XTI was only $100 more or so, but I didnt see any need to spend more for 2 megapixels. 8 megapixels is plenty. The XTI has a larger LCD screen, but neither the model's LCD is really good enough to detect blur in photos.
The EF-S 18-55mm lens is a good lens for general photography, IMHO, but if you want to use the camera for shooting wildlife, you may want to get a zoom lens.
Overall the camera is exactly what I expected and wanted in a camera.
I can take pictures with 1 second of turning it on; no lag like I have with my point-and-shoot Canon S410.
I can replace the lens with a whole range of (expensive!) alternatives depending on the subject I am shooting. I can take several shots in succession (3 per second, which I thought was ok, not great, but is so much better than the 5 seconds per shot i was getting with the point-and-shoot).
I have full manual control of all parameters of a shot, yet I can also choose to shoot in fully automatic mode where the camera figures everything out.
The supplied lens allows for both auto focus and manual focus
I can upgrade the flash to whatever is necessary for the shot.
The battery apparently lasts forever!
This camera is the baby of the digital SLRs offered by Canon, but I think the vast majority of people will be completely satisfied with it.
