Cons: Exterior finish damages easily. No manual controls.

The Bottom Line: A great, solid pocket size camera. Almost no shutter lag. Excellent battery life.

I wanted something more pocket-size than my bulky Canon G6. The smaller it is, the more likely you will take it with you and catch photo opportunities you would otherwise miss. So far I love it and would recommend it. The SD850 is surprisingly heavy and solid-feeling for its size.

It boots up instantly and is immediately ready to take a picture. Shutter lag is not an issue, unless lighting is very dim (like all cameras). Remarkable improvement from cameras even 2 or 3 years old. Controls are very intuitive. I didn't need to read the manual, but I've owned several Canon models before. Focusing with the face recognition is a huge improvement. No more sharp backgrounds with blurry faces.

The image stabilization is a nice feature, but I'm not sure how well it works. Most 1/8 second shots are still blurry. On Canon SLR lenses with the IS feature you can hear and see it working and 1/8 second shots come out great. On the SD850 it doesn't seem to do as much. This model has the 2.5" display and a viewfinder. A viewfinder is useful for outdoor bright sunshine shots that would wash out the LCD display.

Note that this is model has no true manual settings. It's strictly point and shoot. The manual mode essentially lets you choose the large file size and locks in the ISO setting. It would be nice if it did have manual settings. The video mode works well and allows you to zoom while shooting.

Nothing to dislike about it except the lack of durability of the exterior finish. The silver paint on the exterior and the chrome around the lens are easy to mar and scratch. This camera needs to be carried in a padded bag. I carried it once in a regular fanny pack and the appearance of the front of the camera was ruined.
