MediaLabGuy's Full Review: Canon EOS-1V Body Only 35mm Film Camera
The EOS-1V is the Ferrari of 35mm SLR cameras...it's sleek, powerful, and would make most serious photographers jealous. The camera is currently state-of-the-art and makes our other Canon 35mm cameras look obsolete.
Like a Rock
The EOS-1V is built tough--it's body is constructed of both metal and extremely strong polycarbonate plastic so that it's designed to take a beating. We take many of our cameras on field expeditions, and having taken the EOS-1V out in both snow and tropical locations, it still works like it was taken newly out of the box despite having taken a beating.
9 Frames a Second!
Taking a sequence of action shots on this camera is a snap--just set it to continuous mode and the camera blows through a roll of 36 exposure Velvia film in 4 seconds! This camera takes up to 9 frames a second with ease, and how many photos it takes per second is entirely customizable.
Logging Data - The Neatest Feature of All
Perhaps the best feature of the EOS-1V is that it logs information about each photo you take into the built-in solid-state memory that's built into the camera. Previously, only digital cameras had this capability, but with Canon's proprietary EOS Link software (which wasn't released yet at the time we purchased the camera), you can access information about the photo, including the focal length, the aperature, and shutter speed.
The Photos
We've taken the camera out and tested it with both action shots, close up (macro) shots, portrait shots, and scenic (panoramic) shots. The results are magnificent--the photos in all cases are clear, crisp, and sharp. The focus drive is extremely quick, so it's able to track action shots with little effort. Furthermore, the focusing system is absurdly complex--there are over 45 different zones that it examines all at once to generate the sharpest and clearest photo.
Bottom Line
This camera is designed for the serious and experienced photographer--if you're a beginner, you may not want to start with this camera. There are a ton of custom functions that you can set--and doing this is not trivial. But if you're into state-of-the-art, the EOS-1V pushes this envelope ever so much further, and this camera is for you.
