| macthor's Full Review: Canon Elph 240 APS Film Camera |
As the alumni director at a university, I am constantly on the road hosting alumni events. Schlepping around even a small point and shoot camera to record the events becomes a hassle. With the cigarette pack-sized Canon ELPH, I just slip it in my shirt or coat pocket and it's ready.
I bought the ELPH because of the Canon reputation for excellent cameras first, and the super small size second. The APS film permits the drastic size reduction and also offers the imprinted date and cassette number on the back of the print. You can't screw the film up. Just drop it in, close the chamber, shoot 25 pictures (it automatically rewinds the film into the cartridge) and remove it.
The zoom lens is graduated and ample for most of my needs. You couldn't shoot an eagle in the top of a tree and expect a close up, but for normal shots, the zoom is fine.
When I first purchased the camera, not all 1 hour shops could handle APS film. Now, most can, although you pay about a $2 premium over regular 35mm processing. I suspect it's just a matter of time before costs become similar. The cost of the raw film is about the same.
An unexpected aspect is that the sleek size and good looks are invariably a conversation starter. People can't believe the small size.
If you're an everyman photographer and aren't looking for the professional features of an SLR, this is the camera for you.
