| Eck101's Full Review: Canon Elph 240 APS Film Camera |
I bought this camera because I was tired of lugging around larger point and shoot cameras. The Elph fits easily in a jacket or shirt pocket and even clips to the belt without looking too geeky.
On the plus side, the Elph is fun and easy to use. It used to be a conversation piece when it first came out, but now is so popular that it has lost some of its novelty appeal (of course this has also led to a $100+ price drop over the past year). Film loading is idiot-proof. The panoramic shot option creates some great photo opportunities when skiing, hiking through the woods, or walking around downtown.
There are a few downsides to this camera, however. First and foremost is the fact that the picture quality is inferior to most 35mm point and shoot cameras. We get clearer pictures with more vibrant colors from our cheap, old 35mm cameras and much better pictures from our Canon EOS Rebel. The quality is particularly noticeable for outdoor pictures. Secondly, there is occasionally a 2 second delay from the time I depress the button until the camera takes the picture. Finally, developing is more expensive and inconsistent. APS film and developing are substantially more expensive than 35mm. Also, we have had frequent problems with different photo chains (Wolf, MotoPhoto) in that the pictures are developed the wrong size or significantly off-center. These problems are correctable, but still annoying.
