The best thing about the Elph is the fact that it is teeny-tiny and looks like a spy camera. Your friends will envy you and strangers will think you are exotic and mysterious when you pull out this sexy brushed steel masterpiece.
You can truly take the Elph anywhere -- I bought mine to take on mountain bike rides. I put it in my jersey pocket or in the pocket on my hydration pack (also rated here on epinions.com) and off I go. I haven’t missed shooting a stellar landscape since.
One thing that bugs me about the size: it is so small (and surprisingly heavy considering it’s size) that it can easily be dropped. I’m always a bit wary when handing the Elph to a friend for fear they won’t hang on to it with proper attention and it will slip from their hands. Yikes!
Photos from the Elph are in no way comparable to what you’ll get from a good 35mm SLR camera. But you will take better quality photos than just about any 35mm point and shoot out there. I have been very surprised at the quality of some of my photos. Tip: don’t use the flash unless you have to. The Elph will default to flash mode, but turn it off before snapping the picture. If you use the flash during the day, you’ll wash out your subject and the background will be darkened. (This is true of all point and shoot photography.)
If you’re looking at this camera for the ability to take panorama shots, you should know that the panoramic function is a little misleading. When a photo is processed that you have shot in panoramic mode, what you get is a blow-up of a standard shot with the top and bottom cut off. So the panoramics are blurred and have this pixelated “blown-up” look to them. For $250, I wasn’t really expecting a true panoramic camera, but heck, I can do that on my computer! Needless to say, I don’t shoot a lot of panoramas anymore.
Overall, I LOVE my Elph and anyone in the market for an APS camera that doesn’t mind the price tag should pick one up.
