| barakhouda's Full Review: Canon Elph 240 APS Film Camera |
I've been using my Canon Elph now for over two years. When I first saw the info about APS processing, I thought "How cool is that -- different size prints." I have always been intrigued by panorama shots, and the fact that APS offered this was a number one selling point.
I picked the Elph because of its compact size; it fits in a shirt pocket or the front pocket of my jeans. I also found the control knobs easy to use. A flip of the switch moves the camera from classic size to panorama size. The LCD display is clear, and the buttons for changing the flash are large enough to find without really looking. There is a self-timer and there are buttons that allow you to determine how you want the date printed on the back.
The zoom is flexible enough for my purposes, but if you really want to be able to close in on your subject without moving your feet, you should choose a model with a longer focal length option. Just keep in mind that the longer the focal length, the flatter your pictures will seem.
While overall the Elph's pictures are fine, they do not seem to have the depth and richness of photos that I have taken with my 35mm cameras. The pictures are not grainy, they just don't have the quality that you get with comparable 35mm film.
Overall, the Elph has performed reliably. The one problem is with the pop-up flash which refuses to close all the way. I am told that this is a frequent problem with the older model Elphs. The newer models have a different flash mechanism.
I am basically satisfied with this camera although I will say that I depend on my old Nikon FM2 (all manual all the time) 35mm SLR when I want real quality pictures, but for snapshots the Elph is just fine.
