| guha's Full Review: Canon Elph 240 APS Film Camera |
My family has been using a Canon Elph for about 18 months. The initial attraction was its small size --- small enough to comfortably fit into
a shirt or pant pocket. The different aspect ratios offered by APS was
a small added attraction.
Overall, we still like the camera. Its fairly reliable. The only problem we have had is that the flash has started "sticking", i.e., it doesn't open up by itself. It needs to be nudged open (this is extremely annoying --- if you forget to open it up, the photos are pretty much toast).
APS with its different aspect ratios and convenient film packaging is nice, but you pay much more for developing. Unless you really need to, I would just stick with the normal aspect ratios. It costs a lot more to develop photos with panoramic aspect ratio. Another problem with APS is the availability of film when travelling. There are lots of places where it is extremely hard to get APS film.
The camera is fairly feature rich but the user interface could be made a lot simpler. Changing the format for the date (that gets printed on the back of the photo) for example, is much harder than programming your VCR.
Despite all these shortcomings, I would still buy it. It does its job (take photographs) and because of its size, we find ourselves taking it everywhere.
