| jazzmahn's Full Review: Canon Elph 240 APS Film Camera |
First off, I've been a bit of an amateur photographer for about 5 years, after taking some photography at the high-school level, and more recently, taking a B&W course at our local community college, so I have a few SLRs both 35mm and Medium format. The basic problem with those is their weight and space. I feel like a paparazzi when I go to family reunions and parties 'cause I have to carry 3 different SLRs here and there, set differently for any situation.
I received a Canon Elph last year at the holiday time, around Dec 12, and I figured that there was no better test of a point-and-shoot camera than my family at Christmas.
I blew through 5 40-exposure rolls between 12/24 and 12/30, (Kept my paparazzi look for new years though) and I was completely impressed.
This thing is tiny, but sturdy as anything else on the market and it takes GREAT pictures.
It took me a few shots to get used to the whole APS picture-sizing thing, but after that, no problem. The built-in flash was rather intelligent, seeming to fire at 90% of the times I wanted. The RER feature was a little tricky at first, 'cause it takes a few seconds to fire after pressing the shutter, and I lost a couple of exposures that way, but I chalked that up to non-perusal of the manual. There aren't a whole lot of controls, but what buttons are available are well laid out, and easy to learn.
I can't say enough about this new film format, 'cause it always seemed to me that every time I went to get an enlargement or re-print, my negatives were scratched or cracked. APS though, with the whole inside-the-cartridge thing beats that all to death. The developers used the whole IX thing to salvage a few shots I thought would be horrible because of ambient lighting being so bad. I would have lost those shots with a 35mm P&S, or a 110.
I had 25 of those 200 shots blown up, and this Christmas, I have an album of last year's shots, where everyone can order reprints, enlargements, and duplicate albums. The enlargements are beautiful, even the panoramic (which, admittedly, I had qualms about) and I've never been so impressed with a P&S.
When all is said and done, it's all about the pictures, isn't it?
Gorgeous pictures, wonderful enlargements, a great size, near-indestructibility, and APS? A great little buy, and the best stocking stuffer I've ever seen!
