Last year I was made Elder of our Presbyterian Church so I was put in charge of the Worship and Education committees. I also have been publishing the bulletin for the church for the past four years. This church is very small so did not feel they had the money to buy a printer and a local Title Company printed them for us. This became tedious even though they were very polite and willing to print our bulletins. Over Christmas with the many bulletins we needed to print with colorful covers it became a problem.
The Title Company only printed in black and white so we had to be creative to get the colored covers printed and I felt I was asking too much of this company. I then asked the session in January about buying a printer of our own. This is when I started research on the Internet for an All-in-one Laser Printer. I found the Canon MF4350D on sale at Best Buy for $149.99 with the shipping of $33.88 and tax of $15.17 I was able to get this for $199.04. I felt it was a bargain for the price of others I saw on the internet and the Cannon name was worth it.
The Printer arrived and I unpacked it at my home and became very familiar with it but did not stop having the Title Company print the bulletins until I was sure it was going to work. The Cannon printer only prints in black and white which was fine as would be able to print color covers by the trick I used for the Title Company. This printer will print on both sides of a page, if you insert two separate sheets into the feeder. That is just what we wanted the printer to do.
I studied the mechanics of the printer in the manual and it was easy to assemble. We did not need the software as we would be using this printer only for copying the bulletins as I type them on my computer at home. The instructions were easy to follow and I had it up and running in a short while. Since this was a laser printer and I had only used Inkjet printers I had to read the instruction very carefully putting in the toner. The toner cartridge was very large and I was of the understanding that it would print 2000 pages at 5% of the page. That did not mean too much for me at first but found out later that is not a lot of coverage.
After I practiced several days on how to operate this printer I moved it to our Church as they had arranged a room for me to set up my printing area. I was told to have an extra toner on hand and plenty of paper which I ordered on the internet. I designed a new bulletin in a smaller size using letter size paper as we were using legal size before. This printer will print on both sizes of paper. The design I made for the bulletin was in a book form and used the double sided printing so with two sheets folded made up our bulletin.
The printer main operational panel was easy to maneuver but one still has to make sure your feed copy is in the right direction to get it printed right on the pages. I usually just print one copy first to make sure it is right before running 50-60 through for each page. For two sided pages I place the two sheets to be printed in the feeder tray, in the lighted window it tells you that copy are ready. I then press the two sided button and press the book design, then OK, then the number of copies I want printed and finally push Start. The printer runs smoothly as it copies the pages it run the first page and then runs back in to print the back page.
There are many other things this printer will do but I have not experimented with anything but the bulletin printing. There is a stop button if something has gone wrong when you have a large number of copies going. This works great as have had to use that a time or two as this is still in the learning process. There is a scanner with this printer and you can enlarge or reduce a copy. The printer has been used by other people in the church for making copies and scanning items for their classes.
Now more about the toner, when you first install the toner it suggest that you shake it up well before putting it in the printer. I did all this but I could not believe how quick the red warning light came on that said low on toner. I thought this toner came with the printer maybe it wasn’t a full cartridge. I had another toner available so installed that one but decided to keep the other in a box wrapped in bubble wrap. Someone then told me that if you take the toner out and shake it you can get more printing. I have now gone through three cartridges in three months so contacted the Cannon people about the vast price differences in cartridges on line.
The Cannon one was $65.00 while others listed were $35.00, she told me that the Cannon one used original parts to the drum and the others don’t. I didn’t think that was worth the difference so kept checking on line until I found where I could get two cartridges for $40.00 so now have them on hand in case I run low again. I did find out that you can keep printing even when it says it is low, we finally did catch it when the printing began to skip then changed the cartridge.
This is a smooth running printer and prints very clear and fast, so it only takes me about 20 to 30 minutes to print up 75 bulletins. Over Easter we had three bulletins to print one for Maundy Thursday service, Easter and a Funeral. The printer came through just fine after that work load. BLESSED BE THOSE WHO PLAN AND THEN FOLLOW THROUGH!
