| redoncrim's Full Review: Canon PIXMA MP130 All-In-One InkJet Printer |
|
The Canon Pixma 130 is a multi-functional printer, copier and scanner which can be used as a stand alone device or connected to a computer. I received this machine as a gift so I had no pre-conceived ideas about it. Installing was extremely straightforward using the software supplied. Along with the drivers came a utility called Easy-PhotoPrint, which is a simple program for storing your photos on your computer. It also came with ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5, which is an exceptionally good photo editing program though more complicated than the likes of MGI PhotSuite. With ArcSoft you can do so much more. Also incuded is the MP Navigator software which allows you to scan, enhance, save and print images and Scansofts Omnipage SE 2.2 for turning your scans into text files. There is also Easy-WebPrint which sits on your explorer toolbar. This accurately allows web page printing. All this brilliant software was in the box so I was well pleased.
The Canon 130 is a great space saver, measuring approximately 45cms wide and 40cms in depth. I now have much more room on my desk and with just the one usb connector and one power connector, I dont have the clutter I used to have when using several devices. The design is good with all the control buttons on a front panel, clearly marked and with an LCD display to inform you of the status of the printer etc when in use. Installing the print head was very easy with clear instructions as was installing the two ink tanks. (Watch the LCD display to answer its questions on replacing the ink tanks). These BCI-24 inks can be bought very cheaply if you shop around which is another plus.
On the lower left front of the Canon 130 there are two card slots for your digital camera memory cards. Compatible memory cards are:
Memory Stick
Multi MediaCard
Compact Flash Type I/II
SmartMedia
SD(Secure Digital memory card)
Microdrive Memory Crad
Also memory stick duo, MiniSD and xD-Picture Crads if used with adapters. Without using your PC you can stick your card in the slot, press button 1 to bring up the photo index sheets and print. Very easy! Otherwise you can use your pc software to edit and print.
I tested the printer with both mono and color photo printing. I was amazed at how quiet this machine is and it seemed a lot faster than my old Epson printer. The colours were very good and overall the quality seems excellent. I printed out 20 6X4 photos, all of which were excellent. I timed one of those prints at just 54 seconds. The ink doesnt appear to have dropped either so this great printer doesnt swallow ink like some do. Also you can print on all sizes/types of paper and print on envelopes which is a plus.
I had the same good results with the copier/scanner. functions. I found the high resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi for colour copying produced great results. You can even copy in a fit to page and and borderless manner. The scanner is way better than my old Visioneer. The lid is a great asset as its hinges lift to around an inch in height allowing for thicker document copying. I tested it on 1200 x 2400 dpi and the results were very good. It doesnt get much better than this.
Although this is quite a low priced multi function device I am amazed at the quality of all the functions. The ink is cheap and economical. All the software alone is worth the price paid for the Canon MP130. It is easy to set up and equally easy to use. You cant go wrong. Brilliant.
