ajwilkers04's Full Review: Canon PIXMAâ„¢ iP6600D InkJet Photo Printer
Let me start by saying I am not a computer expert and I'm not an amateure or professional photographer. I bought this printer to print word documents, recipes, mapquest directions AND high quality photos of whatever I happened to snap on my camera.
That being said, I think this is a great printer. So many printers that do both regular printing and photo printing really skimp on photo quality, but the Cannon Pixma IP6600D doesn't. I went back and forth about getting a dedicated photo printer and a cheap ink jet, but I don't have that kind of space or money.
I have found the photo quality to be excellent, no scratches, lines, and/or pixels. Color quality is great. My test picture included 3 mountain ranges with close up details of tree tops and distant peaks in the fog. All turned out perfectly, without any pixels. Another test included printing small lettering on a t-shirt, which is perfectly legible and not blurry. The printer will do all sizes of photo paper from wallet pages, 3x7, 5x7, and 8x10. When printing on photo paper, I can't tell the difference between the same photo printed at home and professionally.
The duplex option is great, though it takes a little more time. Printing single pages in black ink is very fast, but be sure to select the "fast" option, the default is not as fast, and is "high-quality" instead, which you don't need for printing most documents. The paper trays are easy to load and set up was a breeze. You can load paper into a cassette tray underneath or load it in the back, standing up like a lot of printers. All paper and output trays can be tucked away for easy storage, packing and moving. I keep my printer under my desk with the CPU and the trays are compact enough that my feet don't hit them. I used to kick my old printer all the time because the trays stuck out so far.
Photos can be directly uploaded from a memory card or camera. For those people who don't know a lot about the best print settings for a document or photo, the printer will help you determine what settings to choose. This is done at the time of printing and doesn't require using software to edit the photo. I think this is really helpful because I don't know how to manually get the best quality from the printer.
The ink cartridges are separate, so you only replace the color that ran out instead of buying all new ink to replace black or blue. They also aren't that expensive (under $20). I replaced the black ink 4 months after buying, but that was during my last semester of grad school, so I was printing a lot.
Troubleshooting is really easy thanks to the LCD screen that tells you exactly what to do. I've only needed this when I ran out of ink- I haven't had a single paper jam since I bough this printer 6 months ago.
This printer also got great reviews from Cnet.com a top electronics website.
