tanyaschwa's Full Review: Canon PIXMAâ„¢ iP6600D InkJet Photo Printer
I finally took my Epson out back and "shot it" rather than buying any more outrageously priced ink for it, besides it had never been all that great and it was terribly slow. It always irked me that Epson charged double for the BLACK ink cartridges, even though they were the same size as the colors, but I guess that's another story.
I have a Lexmark X215 MFP to do my hardcore B&W printing, so I was interested in a specialty photo printer. The Canon PIXMA 6600i had gotten rave reviews at PC World, so after much deliberation I bought mine stripped of it's UPC label from a fellow at E-Bay.
Setup was a non-event. I ended up de-installing everything except the print drivers from the installation CD. The other applications that came along with the printer in my mind have been mostly supplanted by Windows XP's clever "photo wizard", so the less applications the better.
The iP6600D has a large LCD display that can either be flipped up or left flat. There are also an assortment of "keys" on the top of the printer, so that you can do some minor formatting tasks without the computer being on by using the flash card directly from your camera. I examined the LCD functions and all but the "system tools" are all geared to work with a flash card inserted. I suppose that if I didn't have a computer and only a digital camera that I might use these features. As it is, I have to open up my camera's battery compartment to release the flash card, so I just plug the camera into the computer to do it.
The quality of the photo printing on PLAIN WHITE PAPER is quite excellent imho and this printer is fast. I'm mostly just thrilled with the quality and speed of it. Also, it is a fairly petite size - which pleases me since I have limited space for peripherals.
I had previously complained (in this review) about the ink level status function not working, but now I am not so sure. I contacted Canon customer service and they were quite helpful in explaining to me how the ink level status function worked and promised that IT DOES WORK at least in 1/4 increments (25%, 50%, 75%). I will have to leave this complaint in limbo for a time until I deplete the ink cartridges further and manually pull the tanks and compare them to the ink level status function to make a positive determination.
