| poopeebum's Full Review: Canon PowerShot A30 Digital Camera |
The Canon Powershot A30 is the successor to the Canon Powershot A10. The A30 is very similar to the A10 in looks and functionality. The Canon Powershot A30 is powered by 4 AA Batteries which has an exceptionally long battery life when NiMH batteries with high mAH rating are used.
This camera uses the CompactFlash Card media format. The Powershot A30 is a 1.2 Megapixel digital camera with 3x optical zoom and 2x digital zoom. It includes a 1.5" Color LCD Screen, easy to use buttons and menu selections, red-eye reduction flash and an optical viewfinder that zooms along with the optical zoom!. The more complicated features which are hard to find on most value priced cameras that are included in the A30 are: Manually adjustable shutter speeds, ISO settings, Macro/Snapshot/Infinity Focus settings, and the capability to support lens and filter attachments, as well as the optical zoom viewfinder and date/time stamping and Panoramic View shots. Canon's AiAF (Artificial Inteligence Auto Focus) system makes all pictures crystal clear and sharp.
The A30 takes great pictures one of the best that I have seen from a low budget digital camera, and will make flawless regular 4x6 size prints. You will start to notice pixelation when you go up in size, 8x10 prints are acceptable but you can notice the pixalation if your digital photo developer does not use any image editing. The solution to this problem can only be solved by getting a higher megapixel camera. A 2.0 megapixel camera or higher should take much better 8x10 prints.
A major disadvantage of the Canon A30 are that the LCD display does not display a battery life meter. Although a "Low Battery" warning does appear when the battery is low, I would still like to have a battery meter so know when to prepare new batteries.
Other features include AVI Movie mode which will take movies at resolutions at 320x240 or 160x120. The still pictures have three resolution modes: 1280x960, 1024x768, and 640x480. Also along with the three resolutions are three image quality settings: Super Fine, Fine, and Normal. Included with the digital camera is a 8MB Compact Flash Card which will let you take approximately 16 pictures in the highest resolution setting using Fine Image Quality. Also included are 4 AA Alkaline Batteries, Wrist Strap, USB Connector, Software & Drivers CD-ROM, and manuals. Canon offers a 1 Year Limited Warranty on the A30 Camera.
