icom158's Full Review: Canon PowerShot SD400 / IXUS 50 Digital Camera
The SD400 is a 5.0 megapixel compact camera from Canon.
Differences between SD400 and SD300
The SD400 has more megapixels and it has a different processing chip, which allows high resolution movies 640x480 as compared to 320x240. The SD300 has a limit on the length of the movie, while the SD400 does not. It is only limited by the size of your memory card.
Differences between SD400 and SD500
The SD500 has a different shaped chassis from the SD400. It also a bit larger, but it has 7.0 megapixels. The processor in the SD400 an SD500 are the same, so the features are quite similar. The real difference is in the megapixels.
Build and construction
The camera is quite sturdy and does not feel weak at all. Although, the camera cover automatically covers the lens, I some how got dust behind cover. Compressed air will blow the dust away. I found the cover to the usb port to be somewhat annoying. There is a tab that sticks out to connect the cover to the main frame, but if you miss, you can wind up bending it. Just have to be careful.
Pictures
Since it uses compression, so artifacts and noise is present , but since it has high resolution, it reduces its effect. If you print these out you probably won't notice it, but if you look on the computer screen and zoom in, you'll notice the noise. In comparison to other cameras, the image quality is very good.
Movies
The higher 640x480 resolution is welcomed. The movies were a bit noisy, but it would be better if you have a tripod. It also varies depending on lighting. External lighting is very important.
The audio was audible. You can't really expect that much.
Special features
Panoramic
There is an integrated mode that assists in creating panoramic pictures by stitching pictures together. It takes some skill and practice to use, but the results are nice.
My Colors
You can adjust the colors and do color swipes and other artistic effects. I had fun playing with it during a friend's graduation.
Pocketability
This camera can fit in your pocket comfortably and easily.
Included Software
I found it very usable and it did not crash. You can also hook up your camera to the computer and control your camera from the computer.
SD Memory Card
A 1 gigabyte memory can be purchased for around $50. I have used up a gig in day taking pictures and movies. I high recommend getting a large capacity card.
Battery
Thankfully, there is an included rechargeable battery and charger. You should recharge your battery before every outing.
Bottom Line
This is probably the best pocket camera out there. It is affordable and is feature packed. There are thinner cameras, but they have some lenses that cause purple fringes because of high refractive index.
