Canon PowerShot SX 10 IS Digital Camera: Are the Features Just Too Big?
Written: Jun 08 '09 (Updated Nov 24 '09)
Product Rating:
Pros: Great zoom Fast flash recovery
Cons: too large for my wife's hands and too cumbersome for our daily use.
The Bottom Line: As a hobbyist I would love to own it but it's too large for how we use our cameras that must be small enough for convenience and lugging around.

I just loved the features in this camera but there's just one reason why I must reject it.
Canon PowerShot Enthusiasts
Over the years my wife and I have owned a few Canon PowerShot cameras including the Canon, PowerShot A 400, (the only one that was mine alone) the Canon PowerShot 520, the Canon PowerShot 630 and my wife and I now own, use and love the Canon PowerShot SX 110 IS Digital camera. These are easy to use, small bodied, point and shoot type digital cameras.I have reviewed them all and we continue to step up in camera choice of features and benefits a small step at a time. It seems, though, that as a team, we weren't ready to make the step up to this, the Canon PowerShot SX 10 IS Digital camera. Now there's tye Canon Powershot SX 20 IS Digital camera. More at the end. Comparing the PowerShot SX 110 vs the PowerShot SX 10
We love the Canon Power Shot SX110 IS digital camera. In checking out the Cannon Power Shot SX 10 we could see that it has the zoom that IS also optically-stabilized. That feature made for incredibly sharp and detailed images using the 10X zoom. The SX10 actually trumps that with a 20X zoom that really brings things in close. WOW! That's like a 35 mm 28-560 as compared to the 36-360 our current Cannon digital Power Shot camera has. I also like the face detection system and so much more that both cameras have. It really makes for excellent photos.
The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS has all this plus. It also uses four AA batteries, not just two as the SX110 has. That's the reason we went out and tried the Canon SX 10. Having only two batteries makes the lag time between flash pictures much too long. That especially manifests itself when taking group pictures where multiple images makes for a immediate better choice. Something that digital cameras do offers over film cameras. Having people have to wait for a second and sometimes third flash is understandably uncomfortable and at times annoying.
Sorry, PowerShot SX10 IS
In seeing and reading about the Canon SX10 there is definitely shortened flash lag time, great! This is what we wanted...But wait...
... My wife thinks the camera MUCH too large and bulky for her. ; (
Too bad, I really like the features of the SX 10 as compared to the SX110 and many other cameras in that price range, but in looking at the camera and holding a camera that size, I can see how it's too large for her. It's too large in two ways, the camera is physically too large for her hands and too heavy too. She likes the comfort of the smaller camera. There's also the question of storage and lugging around the larger camera. It's more a question of security. A smaller camera is less noticeable in reference to theft. Though we have never lost any equipment, a larger camera like the SX10 would not be as easy to tuck away someplace if say going for a quick snorkel trip off a beach. Something we do often when traveling.
So in summing it up the Canon Power Shot SX 10 is too much camera for us. Though we like the specific features of optically-stabilized increased zoom and that of short lag time using flash, this camera is simply too big for us. Though we continue to take zillions of images of family functions and personal travel we are not willing to trade convenience and practicability of size for more features and benefits. Just a Reminder
Again, we have never owned this camera so I cannot give a truly Helpful review of all its features and benefits but did give it serious consideration and a good look before deciding it wasn't for us.
Also please realize that the three star rating cannot include personal long time use of the camera that may be a five star as one of the Camera Leads of Epinions.com viewed it or perhaps that of a loser product that falls apart after a year or two. If I had to bet though, after owning many Canon PowerShot digital cameras, I would put my money on the former.
It's now Novemeber '09 and I am looking at the step up to the Canon SX20 IS. Though my wife doesn't like the heavier camera I would love to have the Canon SX 20 IS with an even higher 12.1 megapixel resolution along with the same 20x zoom lens 28 to 560mm (35mm equivalent) and the good sized the 2.5 inch sized screen. I like the sleek looking style of the Canon SX 20 IS too. We'll see what the future brings.
