| keeferb's Full Review: Canon ZR45MC Mini DV Camcorder |
I am a first-time camcorder owner, so I did a lot of research before buying this model. After reading lots of reviews, I narrowed my choices down to the Canon ZR45 and the Sony TRV18. The Canon was smaller, lighter, cheaper and fit better in my hand than the Sony. Canon was the logical choice, right? Well, the one thing that bothered me was reading some of the reviews mentioning the motor whine. I knew this is something that would really bother me, even if I loved everything else about it. Well, we are taking a trip to Mexico and I needed to make a decision. I took my chances and ordered the Canon. After a few weeks of use I can say that I'm definitely happy with my purchase. Best part of all...the motor whine is a non-issue. If I hadn't read the reviews about it, I'm not even sure I would have noticed it. Maybe some units are worse than others, or maybe if I had previously owned a camcorder I would notice it more. Yeah, the noise is there when watching recordings in quiet settings, but I hardly notice it. The video quality is great and it tons of features, probably some I'll never use. The still photos are average at best, but I didn't buy this for its picture taking ability. I have a 2-megapixel digital camera for that. It's just a nice feature to have to take a quick photo for emailing, etc. Also, the battery that is included only lasts about 45 minutes using the LCD. I bought a Lenmar LIC-511 battery that lasts about 2 hours. The instruction book could also be improved, but it's acceptable.
