unk1911's Full Review: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM Lens
I purchased this lens in February of 2008 and have been shooting with it ever since. I am not a professional photographer by any stretch of imagination. I picked it up as a hobby two years ago. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM allows me to take incredible photos, especially in semi-dark conditions where any other lens would have completely flopped. The 2.8 aperature makes it possible to take really good pictures, with ISO set to 1600, in very poorly illuminated conditions, at very high zoom levels (200mm). I have taken this lens with me on many shoots, whether it was shooting fighter jets at an air show or seaguls hovering over the shores of Brighton Beach or Niagara Falls. There is no end to the pleasure that this lens brings to my attempts at amateur photography. Anywhere I go with it, it seems everyone is somewhat jealous. Sometimes it can be a bit too much to have to put up with all the comments that other amateur photographers make, their envy at seeing me with this lens. Actually, sometimes I wish the lens didn't look so hot so that people would just leave me and my lens alone....
Just to add to the points I have already made, this lens can be used to make portraits, in the 70mm zoom range, and it has a way of blurring out the background, creating a milky backdrop and bringing out the subject (whether it would be a person's face or a blade of grass) and blurring out the background, in the most artistic fashion... I would, almost orgasmically, recommend this lens to anyone who can afford it.
