Hex Barbell: Now I Don't Have To Worry About Weight Plates Falling On My Head!!
Written: Jul 31 '03
Pros:Solid weight, Textured grip handle, won't roll around if you put them on the floor
Cons:Grip's texture can dig into your hands
The Bottom Line: These are great weights that won't roll around nor will they come apart during use or ever.
As far as exercising goes I like a combination of free weight and using a machine. Just like all exercise machines are not created equally neither are free weights. My preferred free weights are dumbbells (when exercising alone you are less likely to strangle yourself with a dumbbell than a barbell). My favorite kind of dumbbell is the Hex Dumbbells SDG made by Cap. The following is a list of reasons I like them over other dumbbells.
Weight and Design:
I have actually seen these weights range form 3 lbs through 50 lbs. The design is quite simple: you have a handle with a head welded on each end. The two heads are hexagonal in shape and the handle is a rough textured design. The outer layer of the weights seem to be covered with some kind of vinyl or Teflon I imagine that this is so that the weights dont rust as easily as some of the other kinds do.
Things I like about the weights.
For starters these weights are compact. It doesnt matter size you buy, it is still easy to put in a spot that is out of the way. Even the heaviest ones (which are a lot bigger then lightest one) still are easy to store without being in the way or taking up a lot of space.
Second good thing about the Cap dumbbells are the textured handle. The nature of the handle allows you to have a better grip on the dumbbell. Other, smoother handled dumbbells I have used have a feeling that they will slip form my bare hands at any moment. These never gave me that feeling.
Another thing I like is the fact that the heads are welded on. All you have to do is pick up the weight and start exercising; no more fussing with getting the proper plates on the bar and then having to worry if you secured them on properly. That pretty much means that if you are doing an exercise where the weight will physically be over you body or head, the plate wont come loose and fall on you.
A final thing that I appreciate about them is the hexagonal head; there is always a flat part of the weight on the ground (unless you are using it). Unlike rounded weights you dont have to worry about the dumbbell rolling away to chat with another piece of equipment, the wall, or it trying to get under your feet when you arent looking.
What I Dont Like:
Getting back to the handle portion of these dumbbells: I dont like the texture feel of the grip. I know I said that I like it because it makes the dumbbell easier to grip but after a while the grip really digs into your hand (at least mine). A simple solution is to just get a pair of exercise gloves. Gloves will protect your hand form getting sore form the handle.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for a great set of dumbbells I recommend the Cap Hexagonal dumbbells. They are extremely durable, I have never seen them rust, and they wont roll away. They can be purchased at any sporting goods store and the cost from $0.35 to $0.59 a pound depending where you get them. If you get them I wish you happy exercising.
