The Bottom Line: AVOID CAPITAL ONE LIKE THE PLAGUE. Their business practices are extremely shady.

I went online to shop for a loan for a used car and at the top of the list was Cap One Auto Finance and I was approved for over $15,000 easily. THE "CHECK"arrived in the mail quickly and I bought the car with it and included "Gap Coverage." Then this fairy tale turned into a nightmare. The car was totaled in an accident. My primary insurance paid but it was not the total amount of the loan. I immediately received a letter from Cap One demanding payment within 10 days. I called their Customer Service Line and after experiencing a horrific journey through their phone queue to reach a real person, "Charles" threatened me with calling my neighbors, my job, my relatives etc in order to collect the debt. I was obviously upset with his arrogant attitude and let him know it. He hung up on me after stating he wouldn't speak further with me. I reported the incident to Capital One. I received NO response. I faxed a complaint. NO response. I contacted the FTC. No response from them either. Then I received a letter offering me a settlement amount of less than the balance owed. I had to take a loan against a credit card but paid them to get them off my back because I was receiving letters from them every few days. I had not been able to access the account online because they had immediately shut off my access. I couldn't get a response by phone, fax or email. They then reported the loan as a default to the credit bureaus even though it was them that offered the lesser settlement amount, which I paid. My experience was like that of meeting a Latin Lover: all romance and sweetness at first but when they get what they want things get nasty. Their business practices are shady. Their Customer Service is without exception, the worst I have ever experienced. And then they make sure you have a black mark on an otherwise spotless credit report. AVOID CAPITAL ONE AUTO FIANCE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!
