kjscrafts's Full Review: Laura Krauss Melmed - Capital!: Washington D.C. fr...
This is a fun book for young kids (about up to age 6) to have read to them or read on their own about the different things in Washington, D.C. The book is formatted A to Z with pretty much every letter getting a page or two. Each letter (except X and Y) have a short 4 line poem related to the topic chosen to represent that letter, such as Supreme Court for the S poem. On the page(s) for the specific alphabet letter there is an illustration of the topic, such as a depiction of the Supreme Court sitting in session. This one even has the names of the different members of the Supreme Court labeled, although I believe it may be slightly out of date on this. However, this is the only information in the book that I noticed being out of date because most of the information is about sites that have changed little over history or is in fact historical information, such as quotes of famous Presidents. Overall this book is fun for kids to read. For one, it is colorfully illustrated. Secondly, kids enjoy discovering the little text tidbits about the chosen topic that are placed around the page in the illustrations. It is especially fun for kids who have been to some of the attractions in D.C. to remember their own visit or to get them more excited about an upcoming first trip to D.C.
