nordmann's Full Review: Jura-Capresso MT500 10-Cup Coffee Maker
I'm very picky about my coffee, and prefer that it taste in the cup the way coffee smells as it's being ground. I used to think that the only ways of experiencing this level of coffee flavor was to hand-drip it through a Chemex funnel or to go to a top-notch coffee house. Although this maker has some annoyances, it delivers on flavor.
Most automatic brewers for home use fail to get the water hot enough while brewing is taking place, which results in coffee that has little actual coffee flavor, but lots of sourness. I measured the brewing temperature, and this maker gets the water temperature up around 195-degrees, where it needs to be for good extraction. Fresh from the machine the coffee is very hot, and the carafe does a respectable job of keeping it that way for an hour or two. (And after an hour or two of sitting around, any coffee is going to be undrinkable, whether or not it's still hot.)
One important point: my first pot came out way too weak, and I had to adjust my grinder so as to produce a significantly finer grind--more like a hand-drip grind than an auto-drip grind--in order to get the coffee strong enough. But once I did that, I had coffeehouse-quality brew.
I concur that the ergonomics aren't the best, and the way the carafe and drip funnel is designed sets it up for potential problems. In two months of use, I haven't experienced any of these problems, however. If you're quality-obsessed enough (and coordinated enough) to drip your own coffee by hand, this maker is an alternate, easier means of achieving the same thing.
