splogue's Full Review: Jura-Capresso MT500 10-Cup Coffee Maker
This machine makes coffee really fast - around seven minutes for a full carafe. The coffee that results from such a fast brew tastes great, with no bitterness. It is also very attractive. The wide, shallow design looks like it was made with poured metal alloy, and is quite a showcase for the carafe.
I haven't had any problems with carafe placement or leaking. Honestly, I just stick it under there and it works. I do rinse out the carafe with hot water before I make coffee, both to keep it clean and also to pre-warm it, which is important with steel carafes because they'll wick away some of the heat from the coffee otherwise. Glass carafes don't have this problem, but are extremely breakable, so it is a good tradeoff.
I also don't have any trouble reading the water level, which some people have commented on. There is a little red floating ball that goes up with the water, pretty much the same as any other machine. The numbers are very small and hard to read, but it only goes up to ten so this isn't really a big issue. I do think they should have put a float on both sides, as the unit would allow for it and that would allow reading from either the right or the left side, instead of just the right as it is now. A small quibble.
There are some drawbacks, however, as this is definitely not a perfect product. The main thing is that the machine lets you fill it past the point where the carafe will overflow. So, I always make nine cups instead of ten. If it overflows, the electronics at the base will get soaked, which would not be a good thing. Why they didn't just make it an inch shorter, so that it wouldn't be possible to add too much water is a mystery.
It is very wide and shallow, which works very well for my space, but make sure it will work for yours. It cannot be placed under an overhead cabinet, regardless of height because you won't have room to open the top to add water. Plus, when the cycle is almost complete, a lot of hot steam comes out a vent in the top, which will quickly ruin an overhead cabinet. So, plan on having this on an open countertop, preferably next to a sink so you can fill it.
Finally, it is VERY expensive. Heck, I'll even say it is overpriced. However, I haven't been able to find a machine that makes better coffee than this one, uses a stainless steel carafe, and looks like a work of art. So, I'd definitely buy it again.
