Pros: Standard seafood at a fairly reasonable price.
Cons: Special orders DO upset them!
The Bottom Line: I would walk past this restaurant, and try another of the seafood restaurants in the pier area. Maybe there's one that's a bit more kid-friendly, and vegetarian-friendly.

| judywebber's Full Review: Captain Kidd's |
Captain Kidds is a self serve seafood restaurant. The one we visited was near the Redondo Beach Pier in Redondo Beach, California.
The menu features the usual "fast-food type" seafood. A lot of deep fried items, cooked to order, in this location. Diners place their orders at a counter, and then find their seats, wait for the food to be prepared, and return to the counter to pick up the food once it's ready.
The food we ordered was tasty enough for the type of food. I didn't find anything extra special, or different, from the other seafood restaurants that line the Redondo Beach Pier and surrounding area.
Kids' meals are available, but, if you have a non-seafood eater in the bunch, specifically, a picky vegetarian, beware!
My son was at a day camp on the pier, and the campers had lunch at one of the nearby restaurants every day. The children brought their own money, and ordered and paid for the meals themselves, while being chaperoned by an adult from the camp.
One day, the restaurant that was chosen for the campers was Captain Kidds. My son was hesitant to try any of the seafood items he wasn't familiar with, and without a parent to guide him, chose his old standby, which is basically a grilled cheese on a bun. He ordered a cheeseburger kids' meal without meat or condiments. This is something he's done many times, and, in Southern California, most restaurants, even the fast food type, are adept at accomodating special tastes, including those which don't include animals.
Well, apparently, at Captain Kidd's, the counter person thought this was quite humorous, and mocked him in front of the other staff.
My son was humiliated, and even though he ate his "no meat cheeseburger" that day, has not wanted to return to this restaurant. I can't say I really blame him. I feel you can tell a lot about a business by how they treat children, babies, and the elderly. I don't feel I'm missing much by not returning to Captain Kidd's, since there are several other similar restaurants within walking distance.
