Pros: No heavy steam cleaning equipment necessary - only your regular vacuum
Cons: Requires "elbow grease", can use a lot of vacuum cleaner bags
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend this cleaning product. All you need is your own vacuum and a bit of elbow grease.

| emannella's Full Review: Capture Carpet Cleaning Kit 4858100 |
After watching professionals clean the carpets at my place of work with a dry powder system, I decided to look for something similar I could use at home.
A couple of times a year, my husband and I would go rent a steam cleaner; which has to be lugged home, filled with water and solution, and when finished returned to the store. Not to mention, the problem of waiting for the carpets to dry and using the heavy machine on the stairs.
In your Capture cleaning starter kit you get a bottle of the Soil release spray solution, a special scrub brush and a bucket of the dry cleaner. Also, if you don't already have one, you will need a pole to screw the brush onto for large rooms, unless you like getting onto your hands and knees - I don't.
Before you start, vacuum your room. Take the spray which is called the "Soil Release pre-mist" and I spray about 4 foot sections at a time. The manufacturer recommends not going larger that 6 x 6. Take the little basket (don't know how else to describe it) from the dry cleaning bucket- The "stuff" is sort of like a powder - and sprinkle it over the area where you sprayed the liquid. Then using the brush, you scrub the dry cleaner into the carpet and wait 30 minutes before vacuuming. Usually by the time I have finished a room, I can go back to where I started and begin the vacuuming. They recommend that you use a fresh vacuum cleaner bag. The only problem is the powder fills the pores in the bag (I have an Electrolux and it stops when it thinks the bag is full) and you may have to change it often. After you've vacuumed - Voila! Your carpets are clean and completely dry after you're finished so you don't have to worry about them picking up dirt if someone should walk on them as with the wet methods.
When using the Capture on stairs, it's better to remove the brush from the pole and scrub by hand. Using the pole can be awkward.
Occasionally, if you have a really stubborn area you may have to repeat the treatment, but it even got most of those out. I did have some stains that would not come out, but my carpet is 15 years old and I raised 4 children. I was amazed at how clean my carpets looked. I have never gotten such results with a steam cleaner.
The manufacturer recommends the following timetable for carpet cleaning with Capture:
1. Weekly: Clean spots and spills weekly or as they occur.
2. Monthly: Clean all carpeted entryways and areas adjacent to hardsurface floors once a month. These areas see the highest degree of soiling and wear. Therefore, more frequent, regular care is necessary.
3. Quarterly: Clean all traffic lanes throughout the home. No need to move furniture and clean carpet that never gets dirty. Just clean the areas that you walk on regularly (hallways, bed to bathroom, etc.)
4. Yearly to 18 months: Clean all carpeted areas. This cleans dust and other particulates that settle on carpets over time.
This system, according to Milliken (the manufacturer) is safe for all carpets and rugs and reduces the level of dust mite allergens, pet dander, and pollen in your home.
The only difficulty I've had is using the soil release spray, my hand gets tired from squeezing the trigger (but it's just a minor inconvenience). It would be nice if they offered a different type of sprayer, although you could probably buy a garden sprayer that would work. It would have to be one that's not too big, because you really don't need a whole lot of solution.
The starter kit is $17.97 at Lowes. It is also available at Home Depot. You can also buy the Pre-mist and Dry carpet cleaner separately.
