A near empty local tile and carpet store is not usually the setting for witnessing a modern cleaning miracle. Mrs. Spudmaniac and I had just purchased some carpeting and were asking the saleswoman about carpet cleaning methods. She pointed to a container of something called Capture, a powder brushed into the carpet. I listened skeptically as she sprinkled some of the white, pleasant smelling powder onto the soiled, trampled floor covering.
As she rubbed the powder into the carpet fiber with her brush I witnessed the grungy slowly become ungrunged. There was a marked difference between the treated and untreated areas of the flooring. The saleswoman went on to tell us that the powder would continue to clean and that the carpet would look even better after an hour or so. I was sold and have been using Capture ever since.
WHAT IS THIS STUFF?
Capture is a heavy, large-particled, almost moist to the touch, powder with a pleasant lemon fragrance. According to the manufacturer it is made up of thousands of small porous particles that look and act like tiny sponges that absorb dirt, spots, and spills. The Capture particles are composed of thousands of synthetic polymer particles that contain water based cleaning solution.
Somehow Capture absorbs and clings to dirt particles on the carpet fibers. The Capture process is supposed to make your vacuum more efficient, enabling it to remove more dirt and particles from your carpet. I know this seems incredible but seeing is believing.
THE CAPTURE SYSTEM AND APPLICATION
You may buy the individual components of the Capture cleaning system separately, but it's more economical to buy the inclusive kit. It consists of a large tub of the Capture powder with a plastic sprinkler, a long handled brush, and a container of Capture Soil Release Premist. I like to vacuum the carpet before I clean it with Capture, but this isn't a prerequisite.
The first step in the cleaning process is to lightly spray the carpet with the PreMist solution. I only spray those areas heavily traveled or noticeably soiled.
Next sprinkle the Capture powder onto the carpet. Using the brush, work the powder into the carpet, brushing in several different directions. Wait thirty minutes, and vacuum away the accumulated grime and dirt. I often leave the Capture on the carpet for several hours before vacuuming giving it more time to work.
PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
We have light colored, solid wall-to-wall carpeting that shows dirt readily. Yet for over ten years I've managed to keep it looking clean with Capture.
The stairs in our split foyer get a lot of use and more dirt than any area of the house. Despite this handicap and no matter how hopelessly dirty they appear, a little brushing with Capture quickly restores them to their previous spotless state. Even after all these years I am still awed by the transformation and amazing results.
The hallway is a second trouble spot, and a freshening every month or two revives the carpet there noticeably. Large areas of the house are Captured on a less regular basis, maybe once or twice a year. Spots and spills on the carpeting, especially pet accidents or potato juice spills are treated as soon as theyre noticed.
I am extremely pleased with this product and highly recommend it. As an added bonus the maker claims that regular use of Capture reduces the amount of allergens in the home.
CAPTURE VERSUS HOOVER STEAM CLEANER
Always the perfectionist and doubter, I sometimes would wonder just how thoroughly and deeply a powder product can really clean the carpet. After all, its effectiveness depends on the vacuums suction power. Thus a couple years past I bought a Hoover Steam Vac after having used Capture for so many years. Immediately I was underwhelmed. The Steam Vac requires more time, effort and exertion than does sprinkling and brushing a powder. Also I dont think the carpet looks any better after a wet Hoover bath than after a dry Capture bath. Unless the heat or A/C is running, the carpet takes an inordinate amount of time to dry after the Hoover cleaning. After multiple cleanings I think the water or steam cleanings change the appearance of the carpets fibers; whereas the only change evident after Capture is the improved brightness and clean appearance.
However, after the steam cleaning the visual impact of that very dirty water is very dramatic and compelling. Ive even steam cleaned after the using Capture and the grayish water color indicates that some dirt was left behind by the Capture. The same thing happens when I steam clean after steam cleaning. Hmmmm.
WHAT TO DO
Ive gradually reverted to using Capture more than the Hoover. Its easy, its effective, and its fast. On areas where our new puppy has peed and returns to pee I use the Capture, the Hoover and a spray on enzyme product thats supposed to eradicate the magnetic, residual scent. Maddeningly Piper the Shih Tzu puppy still returns to the scene of her crime on occasion. In addition some soiling is just too tough for the Capture alone, and only a pretreatment with yet another cleaning product and several passes with the Hoover will do the job.
In conclusion I highly recommend the Capture carpet cleaning system for maintenance of your carpeting. Use it with a high quality vacuum and a new bag for best results.
Sears sells this product labeled with the Sears name, but there's no savings going this route. Also I notice that a powder type cleaner comes packaged with the higher end, bagless Dyson vacuum. I don't know if this cleaner is Capture or a similar product.
