The Bottom Line: I would recommend Capture to anyone who wants a clean carpet without the hassle of renting a large machine.

| english_teacha's Full Review: Capture Carpet Cleaning Kit 4858100 |
Yesterday, I was talking with my step-mother-in-law, who happens to be a vacuum cleaner saleswoman, about how to clean my grungy carpet in the kitchen. I mentioned renting a carpet cleaner, and she said I should try Capture first. She's been using it for at least 10 years. So we headed to our local Sears store and she bought me a kit. I figured I'd give it a shot. I'll admit to being skeptical, as I'd tried the foaming carpet spot cleaners and found they attracted more grime than they got out.
This evening, I took everything out of my kitchen that was movable, and tried the Capture. I sprayed the soil release mist, sprinkled the Capture using the sifter, and brushed it in. I did the whole floor. Once brushed in, you should leave it for 30 minutes or more. I let it set for over an hour because the carpet was really dirty. I vacuumed it, and found that my carpet was brighter, but not much cleaner. There was a particularly dirty area that didn't come clean the first time, so I tried again. This time, I was sure to brush the Capture in more vigorously. I let it sit, then brushed it in some more in about 30 minutes. I just vacuumed that area, and it is much cleaner than the rest of the carpet around it. So, my assumption is that the Capture works, I just need to brush it in better and let it sit a bit more. The rest of the floor will be done again tomorrow, and I hope for the same results. I did find that the HEPA filter on my vacuum (Hoover bagless) held most of the powder, so I had to take it out and tap it to get the powder all out.
Capture has a very light, citrus scent. I'm allergic to perfumes, and I was not bothered by the fragrance at all. It is safe to use around pets and children, although you probably should make sure no one is trying to eat the powder from the bucket! My cat didn't go near the carpet while the powder was on it. I assume she avoided the carpet because it smelled "citrusy", which cats don't like.
In reading Epinions, I've found that Home Depot and Lowes sell Capture for lower prices than our local Sears store, however, there are no Lowes or Home Depots for 50 miles from here. My starter kit included a 4 lb. bucket of capture, a 32 oz. bottle of pretreating/soil release mist, and a brush. The kits at Home Depot (for about $18) had 2 lb. buckets and a 16 oz. spray, so perhaps the $29 normal price at Sears isn't too bad. Anyway, they are currently having a buy one get one free sale on Capture at Sears, so it's a good value right now. I suffered sticker shock because I usually buy generic cleaners at my dollar store. It was a very nice gift from my step-mother-in-law.
