| merchantman's Full Review: Caribou Coffee Reindeer Blend |
First off, I am a coffee freak. I love the stuff, in any way that I can get it, from hot to cold, with cream or black it matters not. The noble bean is a passion, one that can not be taken away, and that is not as of yet outlawed.
Caribou Reindeer blend is a shining example of what a coffee should be! Caribou uses a roast that is not as crispy (i.e. burnt up) as some other major coffee brands, and as a result they send a very civilized bean out into the world for us to enjoy. I ran across the Reindeer blend about a year ago while I was flirting with the idea of opening a coffee shop of my own (tanked the idea as too many come and go already, why add one more?). When I was trying out different types of beans, looking for that one that would define what my shop would be about this fine blend was the winner for the everyday coffee that I thought people would want. It is a smooth flavored bean that grinds well in a blade or burr grinder (this is not the case with many beans as they tend to turn to powder when they are over roasted, too dry you know), and the easy smooth taste is offset by just a touch of acidity to give it that little zing that can be tamed with a bit of half-and-half, if you don't like it black. While the flavor is richer than most store bought beans, it is not too thick on the palate, leaving behind the sensation of having taken a big wet lick of your shag carpet.
As for the beans, I found them to be of uniform size (showing the the screen sizing that they use is watched and well done), no paper (the fine parchment like outer covering that will be found on beans after they have been dried, a left over from taking the bean out of the fruit), and evenly roasted ( this is a big deal, as this is a blend, there are several types of beans in the mix... many times you will find blends that show a number of different roasts, sometimes this is on purpose, sometimes it's just sloppy work). I could tell after my first look at the beans that Caribou really cares about the product that they send out, I would have to say that with the quality shown, the price should be higher than it is (about $10.50 per pound).
For those of you who like coffee, good coffee that is, you should get on line and order a pound just to try it out. Trust me, it will be well worth your time to brew it! Just remember this, it is a very rich coffee, so be a little careful when you first grind it, and use a little less than you think you will need! This is a fine coffee, at a very good price, you could do worse and spend more!
Enjoy, and keep brewing!
