| hvarmit's Full Review: Carl F. Luckey & Clyde Harbin, Sr. - Old Fishing L... |
This book gets revised and reprinted every so often and it's probably in every lure collector's library. Carl F. Luckey (who wrote this along with Clyde Harbin) is a well respected authority in this "hobby", and this is one of the better value and identification guides on the subject, in my opinion.
It's a mammoth book! For starters, it has a middle section with 64 full color pages, it has over 2,400 black and white photos throughout, and the index is amazingly helpful. The photos are wonderful because with the different makers of copycat lures, the photos help distinguish the differences between a fake and the real deal if you don't have them in your hands to be able to see yourself. It also helps with identifying rigging and lip style, for the newbies, and they're also great for just showing you the differences throughout the years within a certain company and how the lures changed.
The book is listed in alphabetical order, by company name. Under each company, you'll find a plethora of information. It lists the lures made, the years they were made, has photos of various models, and also gives an approximate market value of each lure listed. I haven't counted the list of manufacturers it covers, but there has to be at least 200. All the major manufacturers (Heddon, Creek Chub, Pflueger, etc) are there, but it lists a lot of the more uncommon as well. It only covers lures to the late 1970's though, as most of these books do.
Another great thing about the book, in my opinion, are the patent sketches included. It's so cool to see how certain lures were drawn out and how they were expected to work. Also great is the back section which covers a few different collectible reels.
For the beginner, the beginning chapters are really helpful. It covers how to spot fakes, how to clean them and how to take care of them. This is really helpful information, and can keep you from ruining your "treasure". That, or paying a high price for a lure that is a fake.
It's one you must have on your shelf, if you collect antique fishing lures. I wouldn't seek it out for a price/value guide however because I find the prices to be really outdated on most of the lures included. But, it is a great I.D. book, and great for flipping through to come across a fact or tidbit that you may have forgotten about a certain lure or company. I find myself rereading it often just to stay on top.
I've often heard this book referred to as the "Bible of fishing lures" , and I wouldn't quite disagree.
