Pros:Inexpensive, soothes lips and locks in moisture
Cons:The smell at first, but you get used to it
The Bottom Line: The best lip care product I have ever used. There is no pair of lips Carmex can't heal.
For years I was using Blistex medicated lip balm for my dry lips. My dad always used it, so I just stayed with what I was comfortable with. Then I discovered Carmex. During a really dry winter, my lips became so chapped they started to bleed. It was painful to smile and yawn, and I was desperate for relief. One day I was in the check-out line at Wal-mart, and I saw a tube of Carmex next to the gum and mints. I threw it in with the rest of my stuff, and my life hasn’t been the same since. I am here to convince you to switch to Carmex because it is an all around better product that Blistex medicated lip balm.

Blistex and Carmex have two main ingredients in common: menthol, which kills germs and relieves discomfort, and camphor which alleviates pain. The difference is that they are the active ingredients in Carmex, but inactive in Blistex which is an important factor in the overall quality of the lip balm. They have a number of other similar ingredients such as beeswax, petrolatum, lanolin, and mineral oil. Carmex has one other active ingredient that Blistex does not, and that is phenol. Phenol gently numbs your sore lips and removes old, dead skin. This is a major ingredient that Blistex lacks, which makes a significant difference.
The texture of Carmex lip balm is similar to petroleum jelly. It kind of feels like putting Vaseline on your lips without having to get your fingers messy. It is smooth and glossy, and makes lips look moist and healthy. Blistex has a more waxy texture and is thicker which can leave globs behind. I love that when I am wearing Carmex it shines and gives the illusion of lip gloss, but when I use Blistex my lips feel thick like I need to wipe the corners of my mouth to get rid of the white residue.
Carmex comes in a variety of containers. You can get it in a tube, a stick, or a little jar. Blistex only comes in a stick, which is another reason I have converted to Carmex. I prefer the squeezable tube for easier and more comfortable application. With a stick, sometimes when it gets too low I scrape my lips on the rim and I have to twist the bottom to dispense more. With the Carmex easy-squeeze tube, there is a rounded tip for comfortable application so I never scratch my lips and I can just squeeze out the amount I want with two fingers. If you have ever left a stick of lip balm in a hot car before, you know that it can melt, get all deformed, and make a mess. With the squeezable tube there is no mess at all, because it is all safely enclosed with a screwable lid and has an opening the size of the point of a pen.
Carmex soothes, heals, and protects. Blistex only faintly protects. If your lips are in bad shape, all cracked and dry, Blistex can’t do very much to help. It will only give temporary relief. Carmex actually heals lips and it fixes the problem to make chapped lips moist and healthy again. If your lips are in good shape and you just want to prevent any chapping, Blistex works fine. But if you want an all-in-one lip balm that can prevent any dryness or chapping and also fix it, Carmex is the only way to go.
Not only does Carmex heal lips quickly, it lasts longer than Blistex. After applying Blistex, about twenty minutes later you have to put more on. Carmex can last over an hour, and it seals in moisture and keeps lips feeling smooth.
When I first started using Carmex, I initially thought that Blistex smelled better. It was a familiar smell and I was used to it from my dad having it on all the time. Carmex has a smell that is a bit stronger, but after a week or so of using it I didn’t even notice the smell at all. It makes sense to me now that Blistex is a weaker lip balm with a weaker scent, and Carmex is a stronger lip balm with a stronger scent.
For those who simply don’t like the Carmex scent, it also comes in two bonus flavors: cherry and strawberry. Although the Blistex company has other lip balm products that come in different flavors, the Blistex medicated lip balm only comes in the original. On occasion I like to get the cherry flavor of Carmex for a little change, but my favorite is still the original Carmex.
The cost of a .35 ounce tube of Carmex where I have found it, is $1. 59. A stick of Blistex cost the exact same, except the stick is only .15 ounces. The .15 ounce stick of Carmex is $1. 32, a whole 27 cents less than the same amount of Blistex. So when buying Carmex, you are getting more for your money and a better quality lip balm.
All around, Carmex is a much better product than Blistex medicated lip balm. Carmex can give soothing relief, prevent dryness, and heal chapping. Blistex can prevent dryness, but it won’t do any good for healing weather-beaten lips. If the smell of Carmex is strong at first, give it a few days to a week and you won’t even notice it. While Blistex doesn’t have much of an odor, it also doesn’t have much of an effect on dry lips. Carmex can treat cold sores, dry lips, windburn, and basically any lip irritations. Blistex just covers the problem for a little while without giving long term relief. If you want a lip balm for all your lip care needs, Carmex is the real deal.
