If you're ever in New York City, you absolutely have to stop at Carmine's (there are two right in NYC). When you go, bring a big appetite, or a lot of people because everything is family style. Prices are very reasonable considering the large portions, and the Italian cuisine is delicious. (You can always get a doggie bag, too).
Making reservations is advisable, as Carmine's is always busy. We had to wait for about an hour, once seated however, service is quick. While waiting, you can have a few drinks at the bar, or order an appetizer. I suggest the fried calamari which is served with a traditional marinara sauce. Carmine's calamari is one of the best I have tried. Their main seafood dishes are also very good. They offer a variety of seafood and pasta medleys, depending on what is available, typically clams, mussels, shrimp etc.
They also have a dessert menu, which includes Italian pastries such as canolis. For those of you who have never had a canoli, and don't know what you're missing, it is a cream filled pastry shell sprinkled with confectioners sugar. Their other desserts are equally as tempting.
Carmine's serves authentic Italian food at a reasonable price, what more could you ask for? I suggest next time you are planning a trip down to the Big Apple, you should make a reservation.
