| merlot's Full Review: Carnation Good Start |
When my first daughter was born I bought Enfamil Formula thinking that it was the best. We had tried Similac and that seemed to give her gas and make her spit up. She really did not do well on that. I figured that Enfamil was best and I didn't want to purchase the cheaper formulas since I figured if they were cheaper, they weren't as good. Boy was I wrong.
When my second daughter came along several friends, including a pediatric registered nurse, told me that the cheaper brand formulas were just as good as the more expensive brands. Of course I checked with my daughters Doctor just to be sure.
I asked specifically about Carnation Good Start Formula. I had seen the commercials about how it is gentler on babies tummies and close to breast milk in composition. The pediatrician told me that it was true, Carnation was just as good as the higher priced formulas. The difference he said is all in research. The other formulas, Similac and Enfamil, are made by pharmaceutical companies who spend lots of money on research. In order to spend that money they have to make the money, therefore they charge more for the formula. Carnation is not a pharmaceutical company and is not involved in a lot of research, therefore they don't need to charge as much.
I compared labels and they were virtually the same. The biggest difference...about $4.00 per can, sometimes more. I decided that Carnation would be the formula we would use when we were done breastfeeding.
Now, this just may be different children doing different things, but I noticed some definite differences in the way that each of my daughters handled the formula they were on. With my first daughter (the Enfamil girl, LOL) there was a lot of spitting up. Even beyond the time you would think they would spit up. She spit up until she was about 11 months old. Everyone said they stop at about 6 months, but not her. With daughter #2, the Carnation baby, there was very very very minimal spitting up. I mean this child rarely spit up and if she did it was a very small amount. From what I understand this is due to those easily digestable proteins which are in the Good Start formula. It really may be gentler on tummies.
The cost of Good Start is much less than the more expensive well known formulas, but don't be fooled, it is still high quality. Check with your childs pediatrician (always a good idea!) and consider using Good Start if you formula feed. It will save you a bundle in the long run. I am so glad that someone told me about Good Start!
