Soooo .are you tired of bands who cant sing? You know? . The ones that sound like they are passing a kidney stone and the Incredible Hulk is beating the crap out of them at the same time?
Or how about this trendy kiddie Punk-Pop crap, where everyone one of them sounds exactly the same as the other one, playing the same 3 chords with their oh so original trendy spiky tinted blond or red or green hair?
Can you remember when bands like Boston, Journey, Styx, Yes, Queen & Kansas had great lead singers that actually sang? But not only that, could sing full 4 & 5 part harmonies and play their instruments at the same time?
If you are saying YES to all this then you are ready for a heavy dose of MOKE!
So I know youre say who the heck is Moke? Moke are from England and relatively a new sensational group! Once again, as many great new bands do, fall between cracks of the BIG fricken music industry and have gone completely unnoticed. At least by radio, the media and MTV.
This band is refreshing!
Man!!! They can sing! The lead singer has a clear strong voice. King-of like Steve Perry from Journey but completely different! Does that make sense? And finally a new band singing harmonies. Full harmonies like Crosby, Stills and Nash meets Yes & the Beatles!
Hard to Describe
This group is hard to describe without using trite words like awesome Killer Outstanding and just the typical verb-age. The reason being is they truly do have a unique, fresh sound to them but yet at the same time there are classic elements from the 60s & 70s to their sound!
For example: The guitars are big and fat & chunky sounding. Very retro sounding but fresh sounding at the same time. Add modern drumming with crunchy drum loops and great vocals with full harmonies and you have MOKE.
If I dare try to compare them to anyone (which is hard) I would say Some of their grooves are reminiscent of Rage Against The Machine/Chili Peppers meets Oasis meets a John Mayer-ish/ Beatles type vibe! There is a song (Screen) that even has a Janes Addiction sound to it and the song Fluicide reminds me of the classic band Yes at moments.
These guys just mix a wide variety of styles and influences together. I tried to go to their web page to find out more info on them but the site appears to be down. Or at least I cant get there. Carnival appears to be Mokes 2nd album and consists of 11 tracks. All of them great tunes, very hooky and great musician ship!
The Songs
1. My Degeneration
2. Hanging Around
3. Slide
4. Today
5. Liar
6. Strange
7. So Much Better
8. I Dont Mind
9. Magic House
10. Screen
11. Fluicide
The recording production is great! Mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Bob Ludwig @ Gateway Mastering. So what? Why do you care? Because these are some of the best guys in the industry and that means when you crank this album on your stereo is gonna sound full and punchy!
Parting Thoughts
If you find can this bands 2nd CD Carnival buy it! This band deserves to be heard! If youre over 30-ish I think youll fall in love with this band. If youre a 12-15 year old teenie bopper, why not try to be totally fresh & cool for once and quit buying what the industry is marketing at you as good and cool. Oh yeah, 40 somethings (your mom & dads age) sit around a big corporate desk and figure out the next pile of crap to market for you and your friends .and you always buy it! Oooops Im ranting, Ill save that for another article.
So be cool, be fresh & tell the music Industry that we need more bands like MOKE!
