My daughter bought a Carrera Go Ferrari Heroes set for me for Christmas. I hadn't played with slot cars since I was a kid, but she knew that I liked Formula 1 racing and thought this would be a great gift.
The track is super easy to set up - just push the pieces together and pop a small locking piece on the side where the pieces join. Power and controllers plug in so there is no need to connect them with the old fashioned screw terminals. the entire set up can be done in under 10 minutes and taken down in the same time (depending on how complicated you make the layout.)
The cars are quick and pretty rugged, which is nice since you'll probably be off the track a lot if you drive as badly as I do. I have also purchased additional cars and the price is very inexpensive - about $15 to $20 depending on the car and the store you buy it from.
I have also added accessories like an electronic digital lap counter which also displays lap times.
If you're not into Formula 1, Carrera Go makes sets with NASCAR cars, Mario Brothers (from Nintendo) and many other types of cars from Le Mans sportscars to police cars with lights.
The Carrera Go sets would mke a great gift for anyone from 5 to 85 that likes cars or racing. The entire set is less than $80 (and often much less!)
