Introduction:
I absolutely love hair products. Shampoo, conditioner, treatments, styling aids, you name it! My hair is fine, wavy, and long, and I really enjoy experimenting with new products and techniques to make it look it's best. Although my hair is naturally wavy, the waves are loose and definitely not true "curls". I just love how my hair looks when it's curled, either with a curling iron or hot rollers, but heat styling can be quite damaging to hair.
When I stumbled upon the Caruso Professional ProSet Steam Hairsetter in Sally Beauty Supply, I was instantly intrigued by the claims of "Non-damaging" . A few days later, I was back at Sally's for the Caruso's .
What You Get:
The Caruso's are packaged in a cardboard box, about a foot long and six inches deep. Inside the box, I found:
~30 rollers
~Steamer unit
~Plastic carrying case
~Instruction manual
Product Claims:
[These claims were copied from the packaging box.]
*Soft foam rollers are infused with gentle, steamed moisture.
*Hair is then wrapped on the infused roller and covered with a shield.
*Patented roller and shield design creates even moisture penetration and allows airflow for quick evaporation, or speed the process with a hairdryer.
*Gentle moisture penetrates to the hair's molecular core, allowing it to relax and bend.
*As moisture evaporates, hair is "set" in curled position.
*The molecule hold is so strong, it can only be released by shampooing. Because there is no damaging heat, you can use the Caruso Professional system as often as you like.
How It Works:
Caruso's are different than other hot rollers on the market. They use steam to heat the roller and set the curl, instead of dry heat. This is supposedly less damaging than regular rollers.
The steamer unit is a white plastic reservoir tub, which you fill with water. Atop it sits a red plastic "steamer", that needs to be plugged in to start. The steamer uses the water in the reservoir to produce an upward mist of steam. A single roller is placed on top of the red steamer, and is heated by the steam. The entire steaming unit is about 11 cm high with a 9 cm diameter.
Yes, only a single roller can be heated at a time. But, each roller needs only about 5 seconds to heat before it is ready to be used in my hair.
The rollers themselves are red plastic, with a red foam middle. A red plastic "shield" secures them in my hair. The shield locks on to the roller very easily and hold the roller in place effectively.
With each Caruso set 30 rollers are provided - 6 each petite, small, small plus, medium, and large. I also purchased 10 additional jumbo size rollers for $10 at Sally's.
Instructions:
[These instructions were copied from the "Step by step styling guide" included with my rollers.]
1. Always unplug unit when filling. Lift off steamer top from reservoir to fill.
2. Fill to line marked "water level" inside reservoir. Do not overfill. Rejoin steamer top to filled reservoir. Plug into an electrical outlet.
3. Unit will begin to steam within approximately one minute. After sectioning hair for first roller, place roller onto roller post.
4. Roll steam-infused into the sectioned hair.
5. You may steam the shield for 1-5 seconds prior to placing over the roller. You may find you prefer an unsteamed shield.
6. Apply clip [shield] to roller at scalp. After last roller is applied, wait 10-15 minutes for curls to set. Release shield clips one at a time.
The cord on the unit is of a generous length. I've never had a problem with it.
Although the process may sound time-consuming or complicated, steaming the rollers and placing them in my hair takes no more than 4 minutes, tops!
If you're in a hurry, there's no need to wait for the curls to set. Just blow dry the rollers while they are in your hair, for about a minute, and remove the rollers. Caruso calls this the "30 Second Curl".
Oh, The Possibilities...
Caruso rollers offer limitless hairstyling possibilities. There are a million techniques that can be used to achieve varying results.
The direction you roll the curls in will impact the final look. I sometimes roll the curlers upwards and away from my face for a flippy, sassy look. At other times I roll the curlers under and inwards to look pretty and polished.
Another fun variation is twisting the hair before rolling it. I like to grab a section of hair, twist it lightly, and wrap it unevenly around a roller. The finished result is messy, cool waves.
The amount of tension used also impacts the finished curl. A gorgeous look on my long hair is using all 10 jumbo rollers, rolled sideways (vertically) with very light tension. This produces huge, loose, flowing romantic curls.
I rarely, if ever, use the petite, small, or small plus size rollers. I use my 10 jumbo ones the most, and sometimes large or medium depending on the look I want. If you have long hair, I highly recommend purchasing the additional 10 jumbo rollers.
Shiny, Healthy, and Bouncy!
The remarkable thing about using Caruso's is how shiny and bouncy my hair looks using them. I see no damage from these rollers, and the curls last all day. My curls stay bouncy and shiny until I wet my hair again. Used in conjunction with the proper styling products, I have frizz free, shiny, healthy, bouncy curls, waves, and twists, all day long!
Cleaning and Cautions:
The Caruso manual suggests cleaning the unit every 20 uses. Simply add 1 tablespoon vinegar to the water in the reservoir and allow the unit to run a full cycle. To clean the exterior, wipe with a damp cloth. The rollers can be cleaned by carefully taking them apart (removing endpieces and foam) and washing in soap and water.
There's a whole pageful of cautions listed in the manual. Most are common sense. Unplug the steamer after every use, do not immerse in water, keep children away, do not add anything to the reservoir except water (and vinegar to clean), etc.
Overall:
Caruso rollers beat all my expectations. I don't have a single complaint and will continue to use these rollers happily. If you curl your hair and want an easy, less damaging method, give these a shot!
