At one time, I was one of those who thought that pads were for sissies. I do my backpacking almost exclusively in the summer, so the warmth is not an issue. I would sleep on the ground, wake up sore, assume that it was a part of backpacking, and start off. Then, I had a chance to use one of these things. A buddy brought a hammock, and wanted to sleep in it instead of using his Therm-A-Rest, and since he had brought it, I decided to give it a try.
What a difference!
I woke up in the morning feeling as refreshed as if I were at home! Not only did I feel great, but my hike was much more enjoyable. As soon as we got back, I bought one from campmor.com, and got a great deal. I only paid about $40 or so for it.
If you hike with your significant other, therm-a-rest also makes a kit that holds two mattresses together throughout the night. Zip a couple of bags together on top of these, and you've got the makings of a very comfortable night.
The durability is outstanding. My buddy, who weighs about 300 lbs., has had his for about five years, in all 4 seasons, and has never had a hole. I've had mine for about a year, and have had no problems with it.
The comfort level is really high. Granted, it is not going to be the same as using one of those double decker Aero beds, but at the same time, it feels pretty good. Especially if you like your bed firm, as I do. I even use this mattress for car camping.
I usually just strap this onto the outside of my pack. I use an external frame pack, so I strap it on the top with my tent. I've even folded it in half before rolling it, and stuffed it in my pack when I've had room.
I am trying to reduce pack weight by getting rid of unnecessary weight. The days of carrying 4 books with me, as I did on my first trip, are done. However, this is one piece of equipment I will not go without.
Definitely recommended. Your back will thank you.
