jckatz's Full Review: Casio Wave Ceptor WVA104HLA8V Wrist Watch
When purchasing a watch I have a very specific list of requirements.
1) Must have a metal band, I hate plastic bands and not a big fan of leather. Since I never take off my watch and I mean NEVER. I want something that will hold up and metal bands do just that.
2) It must be analog. I have to agree with Douglas Adams, when he said Earth was so primitive it still thought digital watches were a pretty neat idea.
3) It has to tell me what DAY it is. I am sorry but 20th doesnt help me. Tuesday the 20th does.
4) I dont want to have to reset the date (ever!)
5) Water resistant to a minimum 50 meter (164 feet)
In the past I have found analog watches with a digital inset to give me the best of both worlds. I get my date with the day and I get my time in a large easy to read dial.
As a result, minus the color of the inside, every watch I have owned for the last 15+ years has looked pretty much the same. Stainless steal outside and band with a clock face and a digital insert.
The only difference has been (blue inside or black) Rotating Bezel or non-rotating bezel. Indigo or not indigo
Well, lets start with indigo. My last twp watches have been Time-ex so they had indigo. And when indigo works, it works great. But for what ever reason, indigo seems to be the first thing to go.
That being said, this watches light sucks. It only lights up the digital display and as I said before, the digital display I use to tell me the DATE! So at 1 am, I really dont care it is the 21st or the 20th. I want to know if it is 1 AM or 5 AM. Should I go back to sleep or just get up?
Of course I could CHANGE the display, but this watch has tooo many features. And if I hit the wrong button in the dark (easy to do), Ill never find out what time it is without turning on a light. (MORE ON THAT LATER)
Rotating Bezel
This watch doesnt have a rotating bezel, and that makes me happy. Of course if big flashy bezels are what you like, that would not make YOU happy. But now we are getting into artistic choices and not functional choices.
COLOR of the inside
After purchase of this watch my father told me he really liked it, and wanted it for his birthday. I of course didnt listen to him and instead got him a $120 gift certificate for the Fossil store in the Water Tower Place. He spent $65 on a Fossil watch and still liked my Casio better. Opps
While checking Target.com I notice this watch also has other colors, so if you dont like a boring black background you might be in luck. But me, I am happy with black and silver.
FUNCTION
Lets be honest this is a $70 watch, if you really wanted a fashion piece you would be spending a lot more that this. You want a watch that will work.
Let me tell you, this watch WORKS!
Every morning at 1 AM it checks the time and resets itself with the calibration radio signals, thanks to the United States Military and the atomic clock.
Since it also has the date, Day Light Savings time was not a problem. I woke up and my watch was correct, everything else, that was another story.
Going somewhere? No problem, just scroll thought the list of cities (and airports) and BAM you have the new time. What time is it in PARIS, just a few CLICKS 9:46 P when it was 2:46 PM in the Central Time Zone.
That being said, you can see why you might hit the wrong buttons in the dark and instead of getting the local time you might get PARIS TIME. Oppps
ALARMS
As far as I can tell and yes I did read the instructions, the alarms are unusable. It was 2 alarms and G-d help you if you set one but turn on the other one. Then you find your alarm going off at midnight instead of 7 AM. Of course for me, I sleep thought the midnight alarm, and then wonder why I didnt get up at 7 AM. Then good luck trying to turn off alarm two!
STOPWATCH
Yes it has one, have you seen a digital watch that didnt?
OTHER ISSUES
This watch is a lot lighter than any watch Ive owned in the past. I was shocked how light it was. I dont know how or why they did that. The metal band is much lighter (hollow?) less dense metals? I really dont know. One person said the crystal is plastic, so that might be some of it.
