armywife's Full Review: Karl Keating - Catholicism and Fundamentalism: The...
Karl Keating has become one of the well known catholic apologists in this field. He is featured regularly as a guest speaker on Catholic Answers a live radio broadcast and can be seen on numerous televison shows as well.
This book was written as a basic overview of some of the top arguments used against Catholics by fundamentalists, particulary those fundamentalists who are very anti-catholic in their witnessing materials.
The most compelling thing about this book is that Keating relies only on sources that a non Catholic would use and find reputable. Obviously for someone who is staunchly anti-Catholic they would not find an argument supported with catholic literature as legitmate. In an effort to find common ground Keating relies only on scripture and early church writings to prove his points.
Catholicsm and Fudamentalism is the first work produced by Keating and a great place to start for anyone interested in the field of apologetics or for those interested in learning more about the Catholic church.
Karl Keating does a fantastic job of explaining the solid biblical foundation for Catholic teaching on the Eucharist, the teaching authority of the Church, infant baptism, and a number of other important topics. Where necessary, he returns to the original Greek and Aramaic texts to support his interpretation of key bible passages. His writing style is solid and at times fun to read!
While there are many fervent fundamentalists who make a point to attack the catholic church there are also a great many who do not partake in this hobby. It is worthwhie to note that many protestants have no ill will towards the catholic church and so you might want to overlook the first few chapters which explore the anti-catholic movement perhaps longer than necessary. One has to remember that most apologists in this field often feel that all protestants are avidly anti-catholic. They tend to feel this way due to the nature of their profession which usually keeps them around these very individuals. As a result the tone of the book is very defensive at times. However the audience it addresses will be aware of this fact and understand the angle from which the author resides.
Keating himself was raised as an evangelical Protestant He grew up skeptical and critical of the Catholic Church which enlightens the reader to his personal perspective. This experience of growing up as an evangelical enables him to directly and concisely address the criticisms leveled at the Church by the Protestant right wing.
This book is a must read for all Catholics to better understand their faith so that they can defend it and witness it to others in a rational and reasoned manner. When you begin to delve into the very exciting and rewarding field of apologetics this is the book you will want to start with. Hats of to Keating for providing the church with an excellent reference tool in defending their faith!
