Re: Vector Pro Skates - maybe for rec league not the pros (Reply to this comment)
by kal99
Wow! The review is quite an eye opener. I have the top version of the skate (Vector 10.0) while it is true that the skate deteriorates quite fast cosmetically, it's not that bad. I don't buy skates to resell them, like a car, so who cares if the bling no longer shines! On the flip side, if you can find a used pair for sale, buy it. You'll pay little because of the cosmetic damage and the skate still performs well regardless as previously stated.
But the real reason I was shocked by this review is that I broke my ankle in March of 2007. See http://www.pbase.com/karl99/breakaleg for proof!
I broke it on an innocent looking play and
it's the first time in my life I ever broke anything. Now I'm wondering if the skate played a factor.
-Have any of you guys hear of similar stories (besides Crosby's)?
-Is there a known trend with these skates? or CCM skates?
-Can you recommend any other types of skates to remedy this?
I've always skated with top-of-the line CCM skates (going back to the Tacks days) and I dont wanna plunk down $300-$400 buck just to "try out" a new brand!

Vector Pro Skates - maybe for rec league not the pros (Reply to this comment)
by docortho
This is the best skate that CCM has made but no where near the quality of other better skates- namely the top offerings of Bauer.
Here is what is wrong.
And mainly it is the quest for lightness that is the problem.
Toe cap- Now made of thin plastic. This is great as a weight saving measure- until you get a real slap shot of the toe. The plastic indents enough to allow the puck to hit your foot. I have seen a broken toe from this.
Sides- The material is crazy because it only lasts 2-3 games before scuffing. This has also been made thinner and if you take a shot- even a hard wrist shot- off this new material you will be limping to the bench for several shifts. I have seen more than one broken foot from this. Sydney Crosby skates in the sister skate from Reebok and may be the reason he broke a foot before the playoffs.
Also don't heat treat any of these skates if you want them to last.
Tongue - now thinner except right at the front ankle bend therefore making them prone to lace bite.
Sides-- The top of the boot and the top of the ankle have been cut back so much they are no longer safe, If you look at the top of the skate all you see are laces- these do not have the same protection as the boot. Also the portion of the ankle has been cut way down the skate to make it lighter. This unfortunately has been coupled with the shinguards being cut back to make them lighter, therefore you now have a gap between them that is open for injury- trust me I know. This is one of the reasons you see so many NHL defencemen with ankle guards again.
They did a couple things right-- the lace locks work if you have new laces and the side fibular padding is thicker and safer than other manufacturers.
Overall they are not a bad skate but not worth the price markup.

Re: Great Skates, question materials (Reply to this comment)

I fit some figure skates when I was working in hockey retail as well. We actually had one of the most respected skate fitting stores in the area and had people who would drive 10 hours or more to get skates from us. It's a pretty tough comparison to make - figure skates to hockey skates.
Competitive figure skaters always buy their boots and blades separately. The good skaters will pay more for just boots than a hockey player does for skates. Lastly, it is very rare for a figure skater to have a pair last more than a year.
Hockey players on the other hand seem to try to nurse their skates along for as many years as possible. A few of the guys that I know are skating in Cooper and Daoust skates still, fearing that they will fall apart.
The Vectors have already proven themselves to be the best of the soft boots. Nikes have a horrible track record with the heel counter coming through the inner-padding. Easton's short lived SBX was a rather average skate and the Externo, which was pretty good, isn't as good as the Vector.
Thanks for reading and commenting!

Great Skates, question materials (Reply to this comment)
by ggmoney71
CCM continues to make great skates and this is no exception. But the fit is different on these than traditional CCM's. There are simply not as deep or wide and the older CCM used to be. So people like myself think they can just order another pair of CCM's and they will fit like that have for 30 yrs will be sadly mistaken.
Your right these holders are simply awesome and never seem to break. But I question the use of metal in the boot for durability. Metal and Alloys simply don't have the elastic properties of other materials. Guess the jury is still out.
Ever wonder why figure skaters never use anything but leather? Face they are better skaters, faster, jump higher, etc... That's all they do is skate don't have to worrying about the other skills like stickhandling etc...
But they realized that weight has an impact but you can't sacrifice flexibility, and moldability (is that a word?). Who cares if skates are lite if you can't get the power with a full toe snap. Or turn like Kariya because you can't enough ankle bend. So we need to question these lite weight materials and impact they really have.
Graf finally after much much R&D and reluctance put lite weight skates out. That's why I'm glad to see you emphasis if you don't skate a lot - don't buy skates that are too stiff!!!!
Sure these new skates feel better faster which is great, but they seem to take just as long if not longer to break the individuals unique flex points which is the true source of a skaters power and maneuverability. Of course once you get to that point you will have the best of both worlds - unless you bought Vapors because you will need a new pair.

Puck,
Thanks for your skate reviews! Usually when you ask someone about skates they say, 'Yeah, they're nice!" or "I like those ones"; ie: not very informative. Reading your reviews; I actually learn something!

Chris,
I'm sorry to hear about the frustrations you're having with the Vectors. This isn't something that I've heard of happening before with the Vectors. With Bauer's Vapor skates it was more common the case than not. It sounds like the holders were mounted incorrectly. I doubt very much that the shop owner could have done anything to mess them up as the heatfit is only 180-200 degrees. It simply isnt enough to do long term damage to the holders.
Just so you know bent blades are a common occurance. My goalie skates need to be straightened all the time, and about 1 skate out of 10 to 15 pair of skates that I sharpened was bent. Straightening them is a pretty easy proceedure . . . unless the holders are improperly mounted.
All of the perforated steel is more prone to bending during play than non-perforated. CCM's steel is a little better than Bauer's at staying straight when hit by a puck, but still not on par with standard steel runners.
As far as the t'blades go, the holder system is stiff enough that you won't have any worries about them being mounted in such a manner that the blade isn't straight. Depending on the abilities of the shop you might have the blades too far to the inside or outside. However, I could train you for a month and you might not be able to tell how good that part is, so there isn't much I can tell you in an email on how to check that unfortunately. What it will really come down to is how they feel on the ice.
t'blades take a little getting used to, so don't despair if they feel wierd the first time out. Give them about 3 or 4 weeks before you decide if they are right or not. I hope it all works out for you (that was a killer deal on the skates).
Best of luck,
Scott

CCM Vector Pro (Reply to this comment)
by steelesrule
I purchased my CCM Vector Pros on Dec. 30 2004 for just under $250. I had them baked and molded in the machine CCM makes then they came off my feet and immediately got sharpened.
Two days later was my first skate on them and needless to say I was pumped, they fit great and everything was fine until I took my first few strides on the ice. It felt like my right skate wasn't sharpened. I took them off and did the finger nail test, they were sharp. Then one of my teammates looked at them and noticed the blade was bent, so i took them back to the shop where I bought them and they replaced the blade. When I picked them up the blade was still bent. After going through this a couple of more times the Equipment manager for our local ECHL team look at them. When he took the blade off it laid flat on the table he looked at the holder and noticed that it was warped on both skates. The shop owner is replacing the holder and blade with some T-Blades.
Questions
Is this a normal occurrence with CCM plastic holders?
Is this something that the shop might have done by sharpening them so soon after being in the oven (although we found some other pairs in the back with the same problem)?
Is there anything that I need to look out for after they put the T-Blades on (misaligned boot drilling etc.)?
Your review on these skates went a long way on my purchasing them (as well as the price)
Thank you for any input you can give me on this its been frustrating.

This and all of your other reviews helped me out a lot in picking which skate I wanted to buy. I love my new vector pros and would strongly recommend them to anyone that wants great quality, comfort, and quick break in time in their skates.
